for Detective novels you can't beat Quitin Jardine's Skinner series.
Anything by Robert Ludlum obviously.

Eric Van Lustbader's "jian" is a classic I reckon.

For humour I'd recommend anything by Chritopher Brookmyre, particularly Country of the Blind, Quite Ugly one Morning, Not the End of the World & A Big Boy Did It And Ran Away.

Was re-reading one of his on the train this morning & got a lot of funny looks for laughing out loud.

i have recently got into a new series of detective novels by Peter James. He is probably better known for writing horror stories, but this is more of a standard police detective novel, with some genuinely frightening scenes/undertones.

there are only two books in the series at the moment first one is called Dead Simple, and without giving the plot away starts with a guy being buried in a coffin as part of a stag night prank by four of his mates, who then are involved in a fatal accident as they drive away.

Looking Good Dead is the second one, which I actually read first....

Grin The 07:16 from Sanquhar to Glasgow Central. Sprinter train, 4 carriages.

Off Topic Quiz Question: What claim to fame does Sanquhar have?

Anything by Isaac Asimov
Anything by Philip K Dick

Stephen King, especially the richard bachman books which are great
(Running Man, The Long Walk etc)

Fluke - James Herbert (hate recommending a book about a dog but it's probably his best one)

Try a terry pratchet and if you like his style (not for everyone) he's knocked out about a million books now. (try Soul Music)

Flowers for Algernon -  Daniel Keyes - absolute classic

A Clockwork Orange - anthony burgess another classic

Terry Pratchett covers fantasy & humour.  They don't all work, but you can normally get 3 for 2 or something similar.

But if you still get the odd poker itch, - Aces & Kings.  THE best pick up & put down poker book EVER.
