The luck of the Irish

6:30 pm Friday the 8th of April 2005,
Snow has been falling all day and I decide that I am not going to the Aberdeen festival to play Irish. 7pm Redfox tells me there will be 26 players playing and to get my butt over on the blonde forum. Never a man to ignore the internationals own TV poker star I quickly get a wash and change shirt and get into the car to brave the snowy mountain. About half way the snow begins falling heavily and lying on the road so much so I couldnt see the road ahead. Tempted to turn back but remember my orders like a true squaddie I soldiered on. As I came off the hill the roads became visible again and I opened up the throttle to make sure it wasnt a wasted journey.

I arrived at the car park to see it full in fact there was only 1 space the disabled drivers space, stroke of luck!! Nope because the car park was so full some idiot had parked in the hash marking to the side of the parking spaces which is there to allow the door to be opened fully so that drivers can get out the car. Perfect timing though as the driver of the car on the other side arrives so I am able to encroach into the extra space and get myself out and into the casino (which still has no ramp).

I get into he card room make my usual complaints about nothing in particular ask for the rules of Irish and inquire why we are not playing 6 card pot limit Omaha hi/lo split, a game of pure skill. As I make my way from the card room to the main gaming area Balloo walks in we exchange pleasantries and I enquire where the 26+ players Redfox had said would be there were hiding. Wait till I get my hands on that so called superstar.

So 9:15 arrives and time to take our seats, 16 players in total 2 tables of 8, players included myself, redfox, balloo, the infamous VC fugu, Ladbrokes own Iris Wilson, although the real Iris Wilson was absent. I might add that Fugu is not 5ft 4in guy living in Luton but infact a very unpleasant lady living in Arbroath and bigger than me so I have to be careful what I say.

My table consisted of a wide mix of players and the biggest fish (after me) sitting on my right I was in heaven. Problem was I had no idea of the rules and certainly no basic strategy after my pleas for help on the blonde forum generated no response so I went for the play a lot of hands and gain experience during the rebuy period style. This help in 2 ways I built the prize pool up single handed and got the image of being a total plonker. On the first hand Euan (the resident pro) quadrupled up and the madness started, big pairs where going against sets and draws all over the place, people were raising to steal and then having to decide which draw they had was live when they were called, and I was helping build a few stacks as I repeatedly called over for chips after my big pairs were drawing to 2 outs or my 2 pair facing a multitude of draws infact me entering the pot made everyone enter the pot as they went after my chips.

With about 30 minutes of the rebuys left I had started to grasp the idea of the game, had still not worked out that I didnt need to use both my hold cards in my final hand but I was getting the idea of starting cards etc etc.

I was still waiting for my first pot when I got it al in with top 2 pair vrs top pair better kicker, when the kicker hit on the river I took another rebuy and was expecting another early night which wouldnt have been a bad thing as the snow was falling quite heavy outside and if it was snowing in Aberdeen the road home would be a nightmare, infact I was talking about looking for a hotel for the night. Then I split a pot when both myself and a bookie (nasty men cant let punters win a full pot on there own) got it all in on a A72 flop both holding A2 from here my luck kinda changed and I went on a sort of rush without really playing any big hands I managed to win a few pots uncontested and built up a stack of about 8k by the break. The final hand before the break and the usual get some chips with any old cards came into force when redfox and I limped in the guy on my left raised this was reraised and then called by the resident pro, redfox and Jimmy on my left, the flop came and jimmy went all in, only Euan had chips back and he called the small raise, Euan was last to discard and exposed all 4 of his cards trying to make his mind up showing AcQcQsJs feeling his queens were dead and the fact flushes were hitting he took the flush draw, jimmy then announces I have 2 live cards 97o, redofx had a gutshot and the reraiser pocket jacks anyway the flush hit and Euan was making sure we all knew he had not had a single rebuy and wasnt needing a top up.

Macaroni an cheese upstairs everyone, times like this I am glad there is no lift in some buildings. I went to the main gaming floor and was approached by the waiter asking if I wanted some macaroni, I declined but ordered a burger and coke (not the white power).

After a 30 minute break I was the only person not looking violently ill and the only person not to have eaten the macaroni co-incidence I think not. We now had a young female dealer, whom promised to deal us all winning hands after the bookie complained about not having had one. I reminded him of the pot we shared but he still didnt seem happy and requested more (no pleasing these nasty bookies). Jimmy who had gone broke last hand of the rebuys busted first on our table and redfox not long after meanwhile Fugu on the over table has a strop when she loses a big pot to king high, nope not a typo king high wins a big pot in Irish. Meanwhile back to the real action and the fish (me) raises utg with AA44ds Euan (our resident pro) calls flop coming 55q rainbow the fish goes all in and get called with KJ the best Euan can muster the fish doubles up. Still looking for action the fish limps in behind the pro with KQJTds and a raise from the button gets called by both players, a flop of 939 sees the fish ready to fold but its checked round with no flush or backdoor flush draw the fish keeps the KQ, turn is a Q and checked river a K euan bets 4k into a pot of around 9k and the fish thinking the pro is on AK goes in for his last 5500 (raise of 1.5k) button folds and the pro lays his hand down so fast Schumacher in his f1 car would have trouble keeping up, fish exposes his KQ and the pro claims he mucked JT for the straight (make your own minds up).

A few hands later on a flop of QTd and no betting the fish keeps his A7d and with a diamond on the turn was looking for action when euan bets 1k (tickle bet) the fish makes it 3 to go and the pro folds.

Needing a bathroom break I head off for the disabled loo, only to get a reprimand from the cardroom supervisor for not using the upstairs loo like everyone else has too.

I get back to my chips and by now the dealer is complaining about the punters complaining, then puts in a request for some tidy players in future, pointing on my neatly stacked chips, I get told she meant tidy in the looks department. Talk about cheeky I was once going to enter a model search comp but couldnt find an uncracked mirror in the house.

Anyway nothing much is happening on our table but the other table busts another player and we are down to the final 10. With balloo fugu and redfox all out it was a poor showing by the internet and tv stars, balloo was trying to get some players for the cash game while fugu was trying to get a grand national sweep sorted but no one trusted her with the money.

The blinds are still quite low as we started the final table with 146k in chips in play I was sat with 18k and feeling not 3 bad (I cant count to 2). The pro who was about the same size of stack as me raises from UTG to get raised by a shortstack who goes all in when the flop came QJ4 rainbow the hands are shown top 2 by the short stack and pocket tens from Euan. Next hand the bookie UTG limps in and gets called by a young lady in seat 9 not wanting to get mixed up with marginal hands I fold 6678 from cutoff and watch the button raise the pot, phew I think to myself as Euan announces all in BLIND, UTG calls and seat 8 raises her last couple of thousand with the button calling. Flop came ThJd2s and the cards are discarded and the remaining cards on there backs. Seat 8 AA button KK the bookie JJ (for top set) and Euan 97o for a gutshot, blank on turn and river gave the main pot (over 40k) to the bookie seat 8 picks up a small side pot and the pro departs (not staying for the cash game).

Not much happens in way of exciting hands for awhile with the blinds still reasonable I decide not to try anything fancy and make a couple of blind steals with AA and AQQ, 9th player goes out when his chips forced him to make a move with a middle pp and got caught by an ace on the flop, then comes a piece of luck by the fish with the blinds increase and not many hands reaching showdown, I try a steal from UTG with 8875ds the raise preflop leaves me with only 6k left and means I am basically commiting myself to the pot if called. Rab in the 10 seat (twin plays in Blackpool) a nice gentle man whom I spoke to during the dinner break calls from SB. On an all club flop he throws 10k into the middle I reluctantly call with my 85clubs and he says youre ahead wow I look to see him drawing to a club with his king. Lucky for me the turn and river are both red and I double up, next hand rab raises from button for les to call in sb I fold, flop come 48Q, check, raise all in, call. On there backs AA for rab QQ for les and rab exits.

Meanwhile on the cash table behind me I hear fugu calling for draw poker with jacks to open, this was due to the fact that certain players will post the antes and fold in any game other than holdem. Balloo though was cleaning up on the table and was seen with a huge stack of chips considering that the cash game was short handed.

We soon end up 6 handed on the Irish table and I am in the sb with KQ6Jds, with 2 limpers I complete and the bb checks flop comes 6h6dkh I check bb raises the bookie calls I go all in the bb calls bookie folds, on there backs k6 v A6 and with running on the turn and river the fish gets a healthy stack, seat 8 the young lady that lost a huge pot with the AA v KK v JJ v the pro soon finds herself on the rail. And we are down to 5 players, everyone seems to be trying to post there way into the top 3 spots and there isnt much action although I have to fold top pair with kicker a couple of times from free bb when young Ian a young player on his 3rd trip to the casino who rarely bets with out 2 pair raises.

At 2:30 the blinds go up to 3k/6k and only 146k in play split between 5 players it was anybodies game. The first hand on the 3/6 level and I am BB UTG raises the pot to 21k leaving himself 1k, Les suggests a chop at this stage, cardroom supervisor asks that we dont discuss it during play. While the cards are getting dealt out for the next hand its is approached again Ian seems happy to play on and suggests we play till 3 before deciding, I say I am happy to go on or home. The hand gets passed round to the bb as I have a bag of bollox in the sb. Now as the cards are being shuffled all 5 people decide that a deal would be the best way forward as one raise is basically committing a player to the hand and with the tikay approaching no-one wanted to go home empty handed.

Les ask for an even split 285 each and 35 for the waitress, and its just about agreed when Les and the bookie said wait Ironside should get more. I look at the stack sizes and realise that I have the chip lead and 32% of the chips. They offer me 300 with them all taking 280 and 40 to the waiting staff, even though I have 18k more than the average stack I am happy to take the deal as I know it can all go with one bad hand, but I make sure that I get the crown of King of the Irish before I settle.

Over on the cash table only Fugu and Balloo remained having busted the other players up, but there was now fresh meat and the players from the tourney were press ganged into the game. Fugu really wanted the fish in the cash game and was offering all sorts of bribes to get me to play but with it approaching 3 am and without knowing the road conditions and a 90+ minute drive home ahead I tried to decline which lead to a fight between balloo and fugu when balloo told fugu to leave ironside alone. The offer for me to turn up for the 50 nlhe was made and a lot of arm twisting was tried but with my nephew (16 months old) over today and no sleep last night I had to stay home and write this report.

Hope you were able to understand this if not sorry for wasting your time making you read it.

Excellent stuff Ironside !

I see you have got yourself a proofreader, I prefer your old spelling, but the detail is amazing.

This should get you a spot on the database for sure  Grin

OK, three gems from Ironside's War & Peace missive.........

"I was sat with 18k and feeling not 3 bad (I cant count to 2)."

"I get back to my chips and by now the dealer is complaining about the punters complaining, then puts in a request for some tidy players in future, pointing on my neatly stacked chips, I get told she meant tidy in the looks department"

Two classics, But this is my favourite.....

"I decide not to try anything fancy and make a couple of blind steals with AA"

Living on the edge eh Ironside?

Nice one fella, keep 'em coming.
