You are facing a tricky decision in a live tournament against an unknown opponent

Facing a big bet on the turn with a straight draw and flush draw but big implied odds and your opponent is talking to you. He seems from your limited appraisal to be accomplished at speech-play and he has tilted several opponents.

He says "I'd pass if I were you. By the way I am a congenital liar"

what are you making of this sentence?

I'd be very wary of anyone who uses the word "congenital".

Truth be told, if this was live and I had a straight draw and a flush draw, with some mug talking it up, i might well just jam here, The ITO are greater than anything else, you tilt this guy and its payday imho.

Not much info to go on but i am relating form a similar experience.

I'd ignore the chatter and go with what I felt was the right play.

I'd probably play right into his hands and give him all my chips.

I wouldn listen to what he said. If he's good at it which you suggesed will be very hard to decypher. Only you can know possibly from prevous lines he had said on the table against other players and the hand being shown can you start to piece it together.

Its either push or fold.

The straight is the only hand you can hit which gives you the implied odds. I fear he is betting big to prevent you from flushing so will slow down if it comes. I still think you have more than enough outs on the flop to be 50/50 (maybe even 60/40 but i could be making that up!) here if not a favourite if you have overs to the board aswell.

With a staright and flush draw though i would easily come over the top, depending on the chips stacks you have, a reraise may sufice as you have already built the pot nicely if the flush does come. If the straight comes it's payday anyway.

Tell him you can get cream for that.

Then ask him how he knows he'd fold if he was you - what does he think you've got?

A person who says they are a congenital liar is telling the truth or lying?

to be fair, it was quite a good line to use against me. My sub-rainman tendencies got me thinking about the semantics of language rahter than the hand

It's a paradox.  Like:  This sentence is false.

More on that here  http://www.iep.utm.edu/p/par-liar.htm

The way to make logical sense of it is that a liar can also tell the truth - they don't have to be lying 100% of the time.  Therefore you can never be certain if what they are saying is the truth or not.

But like you said, better to worry about the statement at a later date, and deal with the hand first.

Is it the same as "I didnt do nothing!" Because by doing nothing, you are doing something?

People using speech play usually don't want you to fold in my experience.
