just watched Derren Brown on channel 4

He took a non poker playing elderly lady and in a week transformed her into a damn good poker player

who could spot a bluff from a mile ( that was the basis of her training methinks )

spot the bluff and if you have the goods she was being very agressive playing back at them

she took on a 6 table televised sit n go including players such as neil channing and anthony Holden,in fact

they were all pros ( and amazingly came 2nd,got beat by a 2 outer in the exit hand, albeit it seem like a very fast paced game )

amazing stuff,it goes to show if u can master body language and psychology u are way ahead of the field

I saw the show. What I find a bit suss though is Derren Brown by his own admission is rubbish at poker. The tourney did seem like it had a pretty fast structure too.

I defo think some of the NLP techniques he uses can be applied to improve your poker performance though and no doubt you can learn some good tips for reading bluffs too.

She certainly did well to basically come within a 2 outer of winning the tournament filled with familiar names. I suspect they overplayed how unfamiliar she was with the game. I bet she's a high stakes shark playing 100$ 200$nlhe online!

Definitely a fun watch though as Derren Brown's shows always are...

As i am retraining as a hypnothypist ,i watch Derren rather than the subject and he used some very intensive methods.
She was taught the reading skills most of us have naturally got via playing poker, in a short time.
The structure seemed very poor, and we didn't see the hands she did fold to bluffs.

The reason it worked could be put down to the fact she was given intense training in a skill we take a long time to develope and nurture.
we by that time have a lot of other information that we use having learnt from books tv and forums, (some of it clouds our base reading skills).

Her new skill was very pure and concentrated on reading the other players rather than her own play, the other players knew she was new and were more likley to bluff and bully,(another reason for them to use a little old lady).

very interesting bit of trelevision but far too short.

here's another view on how the trick was done:

Obviously there was no way to get her to "read" people. At the start there were some simple tricks employed to get her to think that she was reading people - the "sort into high and low" is a card trick; there were marked cards used when she picked out a card that she had "picked up" (the 5 of Diamonds), the shill just said the name of the card that she had picked out as if that was the card that he had been thinking of.

She was given some training in how to bet - a set of simple rules to follow. If she followed them it would all work.

During the game, the cards were rigged. On many hands she was given poor cards, and the pros fought it out amongst themselves. When they wanted to give her a win, they ensured that she would be in against somebody who would lose to her on the flop. If she followed the strategy she had been given, she was guaranteed to come second.

Obviously she couldn't win; that would have been ridiculous.
