I don't do films (movies?) so I've only heard of 5 - Caine, Hoskins, Finney, Hurt, & Connery.

But who was the lead actor guy in that TV Epic of the (I think) '70's, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy? And his sidekick?

Michael Gambon
Robbie Coltrane
Jeremy Irons
Terence Stamp
Ralph Fiennes

(is it just male actors, or are we looking at the new PC-aware term actors to include female luvvies too?)

Yes, the great Sir Alec Guiness. i think it was Bernard Hepton (sp?) was his sidekick.

Guiness's list of credits is immense.

He was also in Star Wars. He should win by default.

Christian Bale is the best British actor.  I still think Daniel Craig is a far better actor than many of the names people automatically think of when considering a British actor,  most people I have asked today start with " Jude Law, Clive Owen, Ewan Mcgregor, Sean Connery".  I think he is better than any of these people. Ok, he may not be a Bale or a Daniel Day Lewis, but he aint that bad.

Hugh Grant is our best comedy actor without a doubt. I have tried to see the appeal of Ricky Gervais, but it is lost on me. He is average .

Paul Bettany is also very talented

it would have to be Robert De Niro, Nicholas Cage, and Maybe John Travolta, but Hopkins is fantastic too.

Daniel Craig over Sean Connery? Shoot me.

Hugh Grant? He plays the same role in every film!
