I don't do films (movies?) so I've only heard of 5 - Caine, Hoskins, Finney, Hurt, & Connery.

But who was the lead actor guy in that TV Epic of the (I think) '70's, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy? And his sidekick?

Yes, the great Sir Alec Guiness. i think it was Bernard Hepton (sp?) was his sidekick.

Guiness's list of credits is immense.

geo

Yes, Giunness, that's him. I thoight his sidekick was Jason somebody?

Coltrane I like - he did a secret Steam Raliway Documerntary, very good. Someone blew the whistle.

He was also in Star Wars. He should win by default.

Unfortunately, he's also dead.

What - proper dead?

Dead as in outside the scope of this poll.

Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that. When was that?

At about 2:49 this afternoon when this thread was created to ask who people thought the best living British actor is.

Ealing? Acton me! So you were posh, then? Brentford, or (spits) QPR?

The Camel is going to kick your arse when you get out to Vegas.

When it comes to The Bees & the Loftus Road Nancies, he's got no chance. Joke club, joke ground. He knows when he's in bad shape, he'll avoid me.

Even though Alec Guiness doesn't qualify for the poll, he's definitely one of the best actors of all time.

As I come from Ealing, I'm well aware of the illustrious history of quality british films that came out of the old Ealing Film Studios.

The Lavender Hill Mob, The Lady Killers and Kind Hearts and Coronets are all quality films with alec guiness starring in.

In KH & C he played 8, yes EIGHT, distinct characters!

True Legend, and of course he pwned as Obi Wan Kenobi. Ewan Mcgregor was never going to be able to walk happily in his footseps.

Well, my dad was a proper northerner from Blackpool so obviously i supported....LIVERPOOL! (Had a passion for goalkeeping in those days and loved bruce grobelaar. Then I failed to grow and had to forget my dream when I realised not many Division one sides would be interested in a 5`7 goalie)

Brentford fans were surprisingly thin on the ground at my school, well surprising till you went to see them play that is. I saw 3 games at griffin park, all 0-0 draws. The 2nd one was perhaps the pick. I think there was a shot on goal in that game. Quarter Pound of Rubbish fans were mocked mercilessly obviously.

The mates I had from Acton were ribbed relentlessly.  I used to tell people that Acton was the place where Ealing chucked its rubbish but secretly I liked slumming it over on Acton High Street quite a lot. Always a good night out with the bunch of crazies that made up Acton's eclectic populace !

Bit off topic but Tikay started it!

Whilst most may scoff at the idea of Daniel Craig being included let's not forget the BBC2 epic series "Our Friends In The North" from the early 90s(?). He gave an amazing performance in that and I recall thinking at the time he would go onto bigger things, I'm just suprised it took as long as it did. I think Christopher Ecclestone was also in it. Superb series, might have to try find the DVD.

I voted for Gary Oldman for his ability to play a large range of roles and the same for Hopkins.

Christopher Ecclestone is another guy who deserves to be on the poll probably. And Robbie Coltrane. **** it, most of the cracker cast. Even Hugh Laurie's making a late surge as a credible actor, now he's not just limited to playing comedy morons.

Yup, we had some cracking 0-0 draws, even saw a corner once.

I used to go to a Club opposite Ealing Broadway Station, (very interesting station, terminus for Central Line, & intermediate GWR stop, they had a big train crash there once), down some stairs, saw Georgie Fame, the Stones (pre success), Long John Baldry. "Ealing Jazz Club" maybe?

Saturday afternoon we hard cases would gather in W H Smith, on Uxbridge Road, & peek at the mucky mags - Parade, & other hardcore stuff.

I delivered newspapers (5 bob a week) to Sid James house, on the North Circular by Ealing Common, & to Matt Monro up in North Ealing. Matt gave me a £5 Christmas box one year.

Jeez, I've seen some life.

Which leads on to the obvious question - what might the blondes think "BAFTA" stands for - in this case?

Peter O'Toole.

end of thread.

Isn't he Irish?

Bit of a debate about that certainly....some say born in Galway, others say Leeds.

His performance in Lawrence of Arabia was surely the finest ever on the SIlver Screen though ?
