I was just having a discussion with a colleague of mine (Arsenal fan) about our club's transfer records and we were both surprised at how small Liverpool and Arsenal's were for top 4 clubs.
Liverpool's largest transfer to date is Djibril Cisse for 14 million followed by Emile Heskey for 11 million (neither was great - both were Houllier buys)
Spurs have just signed Bent for 16.5 million - I was wondering how many other clubs outside the "big 4" have spent more in one go than these two clubs...
Who are your clubs record transfers?
Man Utd: Ferdinand 30 Million Chelsea: Shevchenko 30.8 Liverpool: Cisse 14 Arsenal: Wiltord 13 Spurs: Bent 16.5 Everton: Johnson 8.5 Bolton: Anelka 8 Reading: Greg Halford 2.25 Portsmouth: Sulley Muntari 7 Blackburn: Ferguson 7.5 Villa: Young 9.65 Middlesbrough: Maccarone 8.1 Newcastle: Owen 18 City: Anelka 12 West Ham: Ashton 7.5 Fulham: Marlet 11 Wigan: Heskey 5.5 Sunderland: Flo 6.5 Birmingham: Heskey 6.5 Derby: Robert Earnshaw 3.5
Celtic: Sutton/Hartson/Lennon 6 Rangers: Flo 12

Hopefully, £23M (give or take) next week for Fernando Torres. The thing with record transfer fees is inflation. A player who cost £1M ten years ago would have obviously had a greater transfer fee in 2007 - both in terms of inflation and in light of the boom from Sky money for the top clubs.

True but some clubs have still gone close to the records of the big 4. Man City got Anelka for quite a bit didn't they? Shearer and Owen at Newcastle. Leeds for Fowler and Ferdinand? Amazing that Arsenal and Liverpool's record signings are relatively small. WOW Flo cost 12m?

Wenger's signings have always been so very, very astute. There is always the exception, and what an exception.

20m reyes?
According to Wikipedia (which isn't always right obviously): Reyes signed with English club Arsenal FC during the January transfer window of the 2003-04 season. The £9m fee was negotiated with top ups, depending on the success of Arsenal, which could rise to £17m. Wenger did get Henry for £10.5M. Now that was a bargain.
