Its something to do with the molecules being active when water is boiling, and when its frozen, meaning there more similar... When water is at room temperature the molecules are still, or dormont, so they take more time to 'wake up'...

While nothing can travel faster than the speed of light through a vacuum some particles given off during nuclear fission do travel faster than light does through water. When they do they give of the light equivalent of a sonic boom hence the reason the coolant tanks in nuclear power stations glow blue, it's called Cherenkov radiation.

Infact, thinking about it I wonder if there are matching 'booms' for every type of wave? I'm going to look that one up tonite

Despite what is often maintained, the speed of light isn’t a constant. It only reaches its maximum 300,000 kilometres a second in a vacuum. When light passes through different media its speed slows. The slowest speed recorded is through sodium at -272 C during which the speed of light fell to 60kph – about the speed of a bicycle. Travelling through a diamond its speed is halved to 130,000 kilometres a second
Astonishingly a team of scientist at Harvard managed to bring light to a complete halt by shining it through a Bose Einstein condensate of the element rubidium.
Light is invisible to the naked eye. It is only when it hits something that it be comes visible. If light were visible it would appear as a mist between you and whatever you were viewing.

It is one of my favourite facts based on some bbc programme I saw about Patagonia (Southern Argentina), I can't find any direct reference to any figures on the internet. As mentioned above there was significant immigration to Patagonia in Victorian times, Gabriel Heinze the man utd footballer speaks Welsh apparantly.

The only thing that the naked eye can see is light.

The human eye can't see light, only the effect it has on another surface. If light was visible then outer space would be a big haze as the light emanating from all the stars would obscure the them, however we only see the light waves interaction with the planets or cosmic dust etc. We can no more see light waves than we can see  than we can see radio waves.

I hope this helps, I didn't understand this point when I first read it.
