Could be wrong, but pretty sure there isn't one.

True, it's still a garish bloody watch though.

Talking of books my son gave me “Life’s a Gamble” by Roy Brindley for Xmas.
It’s a jaw dropping read of an addicted gambler who can be up one moment and then literally on the street and in the gutter the next.
In fact ‘cos it’s Friday I will pass it on to the first person that wants to have it. Just pm me your address.
epic?

I sort of enjoyed that book, & Roy involved me a bit in the publication noise.

It's attraction is it's honesty (up to a point), as he fesses up to his addiction quite openly &, I thought bravely. We need more of that sort of stuff, imo, so many poker players are busto, but in denial.

Roy was not universally popular, but his image hid the real man. I knew his wife very well, she used to be a Dealer, & then Card-Room Supervisor at The Merrion in Dublin, then she set up a freelance business.

He was capable of extraordinary kindness, as well as, from time to time, less appealing qualities.

Ladbrokes invited me onto one of those Ladbroke Poker Cruises one year, 2005 I think, (I run so good, it was a Freebie) & I went alone. In fact, I immensely enjoy being alone, & I'm pretty bad at socialising, small talk, & "formal dining".

I'd grab some takeaway food each night & take it to my Cabin, as happy as larry, as it meant I could swerve the everlasting & painful formal dinners.

Roy found out, & insisted I join his Table for Dinner every night thereafter, because he hated the thought that I was dining alone, down in my Cabin. It was a misdirected act of kindness, but an act of kindness all the same.

There are plenty of negative tales about Roy, & he did "like a drink" & become, from time to time, paralytic at the poker table. But never offensive, never "in yer face", he just used to talk a lot & fall asleep, bless him. He won many a Tourney & woke up the next morning not knowing he'd won it.

Very much a curate's egg, & maybe there but for the grace Of God go I.  But his kindness (to me, anyway) outweighed anything else, imo.

We had a big bet one year - nowadays it'd be called a prop bet I suppose - the subject of which was dieting. Roy had ballooned up to nearly 20 stone, & we did a TV interview in Barcelone during which we agreed a fairly sizeable wager, about £1,000 I think, with the winnings to go to Charity. Roy paid up, every penny, on the dot, as good as gold, even though he was boracic at the time. Epic indeed.....

I've sort of lost touch with him recently. He was living in Dublin, or somewhere adjacent in the RoI, & always drove a really rather nice white Porsche.

He was big into Greyhound Racing, too, & I believe he wrote a Column regularly for the Racing Post. A Gala Notts player of Karabiner & myself's acquaintance, whose name I forget, ( he was a Scot) was a rival tipster on what was either the Racing Post, or the grand daddy of racing papers, the Sporting Life, & I think he & Roy fell out rather badly over some professional matter.

Must be an interviewer's dream Roy The Boy. Completely captivating imo. Basically did the entire poker page in the Racing Post for weeks and weeks. And did a blog on their website. Not sure why he was so keen but that page has gone from the paper, seemingly never to return.

Next Thursday at the G...dealer and player tag team night, fancy dress, Casino Royale theme, Thomas and Carmel HU for japes. Sounds like a 'fun' night. Will you be partaking?

Oh YES.

Bit like interviewing Billy Connolly (I imagine...), one question, & off he went, tale after tale. Some of his exploits were a bit iffy, but, you know, loveable rogue-style. I cannot imagine he could cope with modern-day poker forum muckrakng & tittle tattle though, it'd all end in tears pdq. He used to Post on THM a lot, iirc.

Next Thursday? Nah, I'm doing the Live Show, so no-can-do, though I have donated to the charidee.

I might try & get along after the Show, but it'd be 1am, & you'd be home in bed by then.

Actually, it'd be kinda cool to do a Final Table Commentary to mark the occasion, imagine all the abuse I could dish out......

You won a seat to the Luton SPT yet?
