What I like is that ESPN refers to Wimbledon as 'The Championships' and only as Wimbledon on the magazine shows as a nickname. When was the last time you heard the BBC call it by its correct name?

Drilling down one stage further, it was good to see ESPN top & tail all the Mens Singles Shows with a graphic showing the correct title, as I understand it - Gentlemen's Singles

A thorougly splendid title.

But will they be as correct when it comes to events at the home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers later this month?

I do recall seeing adverts for coverage of The Open Championship, so I'd say they're not doing too badly. None of this "British Open" guff.

May I assume the winner of the Open on the LPGA will collect the same prize money as the man?

No, you may not.

The winning Gentleman chap will receive around £950,000, whereas the winning Lady person this year received around £300,000.

Absolutely loving the updates. More of the same tomorrow with an upward trend in the chip count department. GL GL.

Off to spark up the Barbie and take the top off a few cold ones.

Kev, that could have a whole different meaning when barbie has a capital "B" Shocked

Hi Tony, thought you might like this regarding old/non repealed laws that still exist.

According to today's I Paper it is illegal in the UK for ladies to eat chocolate on public transport. In Ohio and Oklahoma it is illegal to get a fish drunk,In Switzerland it is illegal to recite poetry when skiing and in Israel it is illegal to take bears onto a beach and you are also breaking the law in Thailand if you leave your house without any underwear on.

It's a funny old world.

The chocolate one is phrased as something like

"It is unlawful for a woman to consume chocolate on a public conveyance"

No idea why, but I love the expression "public conveyance".

A lot of these old laws (like the one that says you can't throw a mattress out of a window or the law against scolding) were taken off the Statute book a few years ago, I think in the last labour government. This one probably didn't make the cut, either.

The law is a very good way of watching history unfold.

Thanks for the laws things, & watching history unfold.

As it happens, this has been at the front of my mind of late.

I've been reading "KILLING KENNEDY, the End of Camelot".

A sort of low-brow potted history of the Kennedy years, very readable, as it contextualises the changes in my lifetime.

Kennedy was in the era of the Americans paranoia about Communism, the start of the Vietnam War, the Kennedy-Mafia connections, his promiscuity, Bay of Pigs, & most of all, Civil Rights & the changes that happened under his watch. Astonishing stuff, 50 & 60 years on.

Some of the photos & memories are not terribly nice.....but to realise that in my lifetime, Birmingham (Alabama) Governor George Wallace stood - succesfully - on a ticket of "segregation, segregation, segregation forever".

Blacks & whites could not use the same shops, toilets, water fountains, toilets. Black men, when buying goods, had to put the money on the counter, as white people did not touch the hands of Blacks.

One Black kid, Emmett Till, was famously murdered. His murderers were acquitted by an all-white jury - obviously - &, soon after, under the protection of double jeopardy, had this piece published in "Look" Magazine in 1956.

Well, what else could we do? He was hopeless. I'm no bully; I never hurt a nigger in my life. I like niggers—in their place—I know how to work 'em. But I just decided it was time a few people got put on notice. As long as I live and can do anything about it, niggers are gonna stay in their place. Niggers ain't gonna vote where I live. If they did, they'd control the government. They ain't gonna go to school with my kids. And when a nigger gets close to mentioning sex with a white woman, he's tired o' livin'. I'm likely to kill him. Me and my folks fought for this country, and we got some rights. I stood there in that shed and listened to that nigger throw that poison at me, and I just made up my mind. 'Chicago boy,' I said, 'I'm tired of 'em sending your kind down here to stir up trouble. Goddam you, I'm going to make an example of you—just so everybody can know how me and my folks stand.'

The Wiki page on the matter makes sobering reading.

Here's young Emmett, before & after....

They beat the lad to death, slowly. Not a nice photo, but hard to believe this happened in my lifetime......

And this photo, I so vividly recall at the time, but I never realised it sort of led, in some ways, to the escalation of the Vietnam War. I was barely able to read at the time, but I could understand photographs.....

immolation

What a strange word.

I just always remember that the Monk just sat there. The agony must have been unbearable, the book suggests he took 5 minutes to lose consciousness & 7 minutes to die. But he never flinched, or moved. How can you ever explain, or understand such things?
