I suspect this young lady's book might be worth reading more than some of the autobiographies on the shelves:

A bad bad day for all of us today, a tidal wave of depressing media diarrhoea & pollution is about to engulf us.

Yes, Morrisey's autobiography is published today.

I don't enjoy his music, & I don't much admire him as a character, he has influenced so many in such bad ways.

But I'm trying to like him. I am. I want to like him, or at least not dislike him. I do, honestly.

So I look at the reviews of his book.

The first paragraph is four and a half pages long. Paragraph, not chapter. Four and a half pages. A 4.5 page paragraph.

In fact, there is no need to remind ourselves what a chapter is, as the 457 page book has NO chapters.

Think I'll pass on that, thank you very much.

Doubtless his fanboys, including the likes of James Hartigan will have been up all night reading it.

I'll just read the first chapter before I go to bed

It is published by Penguin Classics. Classics, my arse.

I mean, did he not go to school?

Being all rebellious & dispensing with paragraphs & chapters is all well & good.

But paragraphs & chapters have a purpose. They make things readable. Nobody can, or wants, to read an unbroken wall of text. You cant, it does not work like that.  We need to absorb information in digestible chunks. To understand it, to help savour it.

A four and a half page paragraph, & no chapters.

Are you kidding me?

As much as I might agree with form and function, we did kind of bet almost exactly a year ago on the success of a book that was one paragraph (and several hundred pages) in length: Will Self's Umbrella.

Justice was of course served and we didn't win.

The whole Penguin Classics thing has caused quite a stir. I suspect it's an arrangement that suits everybody, mind

How appropriate you should post that yesterday Simon, comparing her tome to other biographies. Including those with no chapters & four and a half page paragraphs

That young lady was that close to death. Yet she is still fighting for her cause, & doing so eloquently, & with dignity.

Whatever happens to her in life, she will eventually die having tried to change things for the better. What a lovely epitaph that would be to have on one's tombstone.

It might have won if it had proper paragraphs & stuff.

Talking of the Man Booker Prize, this year's winner was announced yesterday.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/booker-prize/10381658/Man-Booker-Prize-2013-Youngest-star-Eleanor-Catton-joins-Booker-luminaries.html

This is important to know, as I had a little bet on who would win it. If only I could remember who I bet with, & on.

Good news as well. Well, as long as you like bookies.

Ridiculous, Jim Crace's book was so much better. Had paragraphs, chapters, full stops, commas & all that stuff.

No, never knew he had written one.

Might just buy myself that on my upcoming annual trip to Foyles.

I'll not go up this week though, the place will be heaving with Morrisey fanboys buying his book. Literally heaving.

Morrisey has always been a funny one for me. Like the music, my Dad loved the music which was always strange because he was way to old for it.

A chum of mine used to be a die hard Morrisey fan, he literally would fight someone who had a bad word to say about him. However in recent years, as Morrisey continues to make an arse of himself, even he has fallen out with him.

My last serious girlfriend before I threw the towel in and got married was also a die hard Morrisey fan, and she was, ahem, a bit moody at times.

Has he written about the time he shouted 'prick' at me from his car when I was jogging (lol) the day after he went out in the first round of the world champs?
