In yesterday's "Times" newspaper, they asked actor Stephen Fry if he'd ever play an action hero.
"
I'd rather suck faecal matter out of the ***hole of a goat
" said the great man.
We'll take that as a "no", then.
Or maybe a yes

I watched Stephen Fry night on BBC4 yesterday..absolutely love the man..amazing how talented and smart someone can actually be while at the same time not being a complete d**k.

Sadly a flawed genius, one of those polar depressives.

And as well as being a top-rate actor, comedian, & generally funny & talented bloke, he is the author of some extremely funny articles & books. A legend.

You are not wrong. He ran away once because of (allegedly) stage-fright, disappeared completely for weeks. Maybe noxious substances come into the equation. He reminds me in many ways of another flawed genius - Tony Hancock - who was a desperately sad & troubled man.

You tend to find extremely talented and/or intelligent people often suffer from some kind of depression. I remember when Stephen Fry did his runner.

I have an unshakeable belief that luck evens out, & a period of good fortune will always be followed, or preceded, by the very opposite. In poker, & in life.
I've Posted on this thread several times to the effect that I was running outrageously hot before, during, & after Vegas, Live & Online, & eventully, I'd have to settle the bill. During my "run", all my hands stood up, my draws hit, my bluffs got through, & my races all flipped the right way.
Ominous clouds have been gathering this week though & it's now Final Demand time to square the account.
On Wednesday, in Luton, my K-K, which became a set on the turn, lost to 9-!0.
On Thursday, my A-K, on a flop of Q-J-T, got turned over.
And tonight, here in Leeds, my Aces were muffed by 4-4.
No complaints, none at all, & I'll pay the £1.50 if you like, but it's interesting to add fuel to the luck-v skill debate.
I ran hot for a few months, & would be the first to admit, luck played a huge part.
The last three nights have only gone to prove, again, what part luck can play in poker.
And, if I'm honest, I'm very glad it does, because without it, I'd be in a deep hole, for sure.
Obviously, the better players can use whatever % accrues to skill to win more than most, but for most of us, luck plays a huge part in our successes.
There you go, a bad-beat tale disguised as a philosophical tale.
So I'm stuck in a dreary Ibis Hotel Room in Leeds & have to stay until tomorrow, for Poker Week duties. Oh, hang on - Michelle Orpe arrives in the next half-an-hour. See what I mean about luck levelling out?
She's gonna have it all on to resist my overtures.

It's Saturday in Leeds.
As it happens, she's downstairs in the Bar, & I'm just gonna pop & se her, then she's gonna go across to the Casino I assume.
I'll save my hypothetical overtures I think, it's unlikely we'd sing the same song.
We have a Production Meeting in the morning, at 10am, so an early night are in order I think. I'm sure I can make a case for a spot of Online Poker being better than time in a bar with Michelle Orpe........
Hmm....

Hmm....
In fact, I spent the evening in the Hotel Bar with the Poker Week Crew, Rhowena, & Michelle Orpe. They were all watching me. Play Online Poker.....How sad am I?
Tim the sound & Cameraman was coaching me. I had Q-4, "RAISE" says he. "What?" I say. He replies, "it might come QQQ"......
Then A-2, "RAISE" says the great man, "it may come 3-4-5"......
Mind you, I did get outrageously lucky, & cashed in the $10k Guaranteed. More bad luck on the way, then.

Weirdest bet of the day.
Playing the Main Event at Gala Leeds GBPT, there's a Raise to 1,000, & a Re-Raise to 3k, quickly called by original Raiser. I think the Original Raiser was Darren Brument, & the Re-Raiser was Stuart Buss. 6,400 in the middle, including Blinds.
Flop is rag-tag-bag, & Darren bets....wait for it.....200! TWO HUNDRED!
Stuart's having none of this fancy stuff, & pushes for about 8,000 more!
Darren quickly calls. With Aces. Stuart had Kings!

Sat next to Willie Tann (he with Position) for 4 or 5 hours tonight, wow, what a time he had.
He kept trying to bluff a calling station, & the wheels came off big time, at the first break he's down to 5k, & not a happy chappie.
After we resume, he quickly tangles with a relative shortie, who has about the same stack.
They see a flop of......
I check with K-7 (not keen on my kicker), Willie bets out, 5k man pushes.
I pass my K-7, Willie says "I don't like my kicker, but I'll give you a spin." He shows
Short stack man has
, for bottom set, Willie's in a world of hurt.
Turn is the
(would been 2 pair for me, phew!), river is the
, & Willie has hit perfect-perfect for the straight.....5k man stares at the Board before reluctantly leaving.
Next hand, Willie repeats the trick on some hapless soul.
Very next hand, Willie Raises it up, calling-station man calls as usual. Willie is holding
, Calling Station, for once, has a monster -
2 clubs on the flop, 9 high, a third on the turn, all the chips go in, & Willie now has 28k.
Last I heard, he was runaway Chip-Daddy with 90k!
He never ceased Raising & "messing about" in Pots, even when down to 5k. These guys have that special something extra, it's hard to see what it is, but boy, he has heart & backbone.
Be nice to see him win it.
