IT help please
«

I have a laptop which I connect to the internet both via wireless and ethernet cable to a Netgear DG834GT router. Ive had it about a year with no obvious issues.
Out of the blue as I am playing, more often at night, the connection is lost for no reason. The connection light flashes orange and in about 2 mins comes back on. Of course this has played havoc with a whole host of games ive played and ive now had to sit out until I resolve the issue. Problem is I dont know anyone that maybe able to help.
Anybody have any constructive ideas or encountered these issues before?
All help appreciated

It's the router losing the connection otherwise it would auto switch to to the wireless (or hardwired).
Try another router if you have one or buy one to test, if it still happens then return the router and complain to the service provider.

the router could be losing conection due to a device like a sky box not having a filter on

Actually just to explain this a little in case you have fiddled with your telephony connections of late.
You must have one filter on each telephone line AND ONLY ONE, so if you have just a single line (without extensions) then a single filter at the master socket is needed.
If you have an extension from the master it will need one too but only if it will not pass through the original filter.
So basically if you have just installed sky, burglar alarm etc. and put an extra filter on it will kill your connection everytime it communicates.
Phew!

It's possible you have a faulty filter, router, or noisy line. It sounds like something is just causing your connection to drop, a spike in line noise for some reason, or something restarting
However, there are more issues it could be. Try a different router is a good suggestion, but obv not the easiest. Email your ISP and ask if they do any updates and at what times, and if there is anything that could explain you getting disconnected.
Your ISP might have a line test they can run. They will probably suggest some of the following too.
Is your router connected to the BT master socket rather than any extensions, noise can be worse on extensions and could be causing the router to disconnect.
Your router may be able to tell you the level of noise on the line. Sometimes you can get interference from the old (now redundant) ringer line, which can safely be disconnected.
How often do you get disconnected? If it is really often (like daily), then you can disconnect every other device from every phone socket and see if the disconnects keep happening. If it's not very often then you probably won't want to be without your land line for this long. Try a different microfilter too.
