Pissed off with penny pinching materalistic bastard companies

Submitted 3 invoices today to a company that I freelance for - all 3 totalled a really pissy small amount for print design work.  Most London companies charge on average £75ph plus VAT, this company get a reduced rate from me of only £25ph and even then I do loads of shitty little bits and pieces for them (like re-supply artwork that they have lost AND do their copy writing which alone would cost them a fortune from a PR company) for free, I don't charge them - other repro houses would charge if they constantly had to do that as at the end of the day you do have to stop what you are doing, gather all artwork into a folder (fonts, live docs, images etc) and stuff the lot again and re-send (minimum 15mins).

This particular company query my invoices every month. Every month I have to talk through each piece of work item by item and explain why it took half an hour, or 2 hours etc - this alone takes another hour (that's another 25 quid I 'could' time for).

Ihave just told them to shove it up their arse - it's really not worth the hassle any more.

This company have taken to court the last 3 employees who left (they lost all 3 cases). I'm not worried about that as we do not have a written contract - however, chances are they will try to refuse to pay the invoices I have submitted today ........ he he I HAVE THEIR MAC HERE.  They asked me to hold onto it at my house as they were re-arranging their office and they had no where to put it.   I am now planning on holding the mac to ransom until my invoices are paid!

People don't appreciate free.  Anything you give that isn't charged is soon forgotten, or questioned when it's not to their liking.  Better to charge for absolutely everything, that way both parties know exactly what they're getting - and the one who's paying won't appreciate you any less.

Agreed, its not your job to find ways of cutting costs for them. If they treat you like they have done, just remember next timenot to be so generous and charge for everything!

i can identify with this when I did some work for a up and coming software company in plymouth, spent most of the weekends travelling to and from their offices, and I was the only one on the team who had even the slightest clue what we were trying to achieve. until the tender went tits up and they didnt win the contract, they decided they could breach my contract on a basis of non performance (apparantly if I had worked harder they would have got the job).

So I didnt get paid for 3 months work, but the finance directors bmw m5 did get set about by some guy with a 7-iron.

I think you only realise how petty and annoying a lot of companies can be once you work for yourself.  Some of the crap that companies do that we have to deal with is amazing.  Thankfully it's nothing like you've just been through, but it's amazing how some of these companies actually make a living.
