My lappie has decided to grind to a halt after 18 months and I need a new one, can anyone tell me what to buy up to a price range of £500-£600?
thanks in advance

Dificult to recommend any single one, but, I can tell ya one to avoid... There are some Toshiba ones with an orange outer lid... Know a few people who have em, and read a few reports, but it seems that they are having similar issues with the lid cracking just by the hinges. Does not stop it working, just has cracked plastic.
I also thought I heard someone say the other day that there was one place selling this week, laptops for £299 and about £80 more to have bigger memory and hard disk... Seemed to be a brilliant offer...

Can't help you with which one to go for (although I'm sure there'll be plenty who can and will), but the Toshiba's with the orange lid do have an issue. We got one for our developer - cost a little under £2K - hell of a spec, which he needs for what he does on it. The screen is amazing quality too. BUT, the lid is cracked where the hinges are. Not necessarily a show-stopping problem, but it could become one. For a machine that cost that much, you'd expect better. Especially from Toshiba.
There have been a few threads recently about laptops for around £500. Aldi were selling one (they get them in from time to time), but that was a good 3 or 4 weeks ago now and I doubt they'll have any in stock.

see some goods ones at my local tesco earlier, would expect they are nationwide, avoid the cheaper one's of them.
I purchased one from dell a few weeks ago, great laptop for the price but windows vista spoils it in my opinion. It's no quicker than my old one but has double the memory and a dual core proccessor, i asked a friend who's up on computers and he said vista drains all the extra memory and thus makes it slower.
Just my opinion, hope it helps

Looks good to me..
I bought a Fujitsu Siemns Amilo about 18 months ago, its feeling a bit old now, but a great lappy, only prob I had was that I had to go and buy a recovery disk when I last got it wiped, but apart from that very good value, might get it myself, been thinking of getting a new one.

Yes that looks ok as well..
Saved both into Fav, will have to print them off and see what looks good.
To be honest i'm just so suprised how cheap they are now, not sure i'm ready to delv into the unknown world of Vista, but let me know how you get on with whatever you buy.

Ok, no problem. I had an Advent on loan from a friend for the last few months, it was fairly good. I have given up on my discounted laptop from Orange, everytime I try to contact them I am told their system is down, after 5 weeks I have heard nothing from them. I will just buy one of the above rather than getting a discounted laptop with the orange PC world deal, orange must be crap if you have to fight to become a customer.

I bought a laptop a couple days ago for a fab deal £399. It has a core 2 duo processor with vista premium, 80gb hd and 1gb ram. It is superfast and a light laptop. Wireless etc.
I bought it from comet, it had £100 off its the Acer Aspire 5633, the same one on ebuyer is about £580.
Check out Comet's website.
Im really pleased with how superfast it is in everything ive done so far.

I ordered the Toshiba earlier. Both laptops were £309 at 11am . To be honest they both looked exactly the same to my useless IT brain. I have just checked my order and noticed that the Fujitsu is now £299. Typical of my luck, in the time since my order was placed this morning one of my choices has dropped £10 in price, lol .
