4) Hotel Arts, Barcelona
10) Ian Rankin

Hotel Arts is seriously cool. their special room service breakfast costing £150 quid for two including a bottle of vintage krug seemed to set the day off perfectly for me....

Ian Rankin - out today the final Rebus....have you read it yet ? I want to go and get it but I am only 60 pages into the latest Mark Billingham, and I really should finish this one first...but maybe I will end up rushing it...

no spoilers please if you have read it...

Wow! What a great idea for a thread. Somewhere to talk about the good stuff, the things we like, the things that make us happy.

I'm going to post mine one at a time, there is no order of merit, just the stuff that toasts my bagel, as and when it occurs to me.

First up, The Right to Roam act, which became law in 2000.

Until this law was passed, the vast majority of the British Isles was accessable and available only for the pleasure of the lucky few. The lords, the ladies, the titled gentry, the gamekeepers and the gentlemen farmers, who ventured out onto the moor to shoot grouse once a year.

The common man had to make do with so called "public footpaths". Even these were often deliberately obstructed or ploughed under by jealous landowners, aided and abetted by magistrates who moved in circles more bias toward the cause of the laird than that of the hoy paloy.

For decades though, brave and hardy souls tresspassed religiously, and campaigned tirelessly for the right to walk this land unfettered. To ramble at will through the spectacularly diverse and unutterably beautiful British countryside.

At long last, they won. They won a great victory, and they won a magnificent freedom for us all.
