Hot, strong, sweet tea is cool. It warms you when you’re cold, and it cools you when you’re hot. It picks you up, and it calms you down. I can’t get by without it. I take tea for granted; it’s so readily available that it comes as a shock when it’s not.

I stumbled out of bed this morning, eyes bleary, mouth as dry as a nun’s gusset, put the kettle on, opened the tea caddy and reached inside….. I knew something was wrong, but for a moment I couldn’t quite figure out what it was, I stared blankly at the bottom of the empty container for a while and suddenly the awful truth dawned upon me, O…M…G! We’ve run out of tea bags.

I staggered slightly as my blood pressure, already barely high enough to support intelligent life, plummeted. I sat at the kitchen table, head in hands as I tried to get my befuddled brain to stop screaming for tannic acid and think. What could I do?

Go to the shops? No. There was no way I could get dressed or drive a car in this condition without violating the laws of the road or the laws of common decency. Have coffee instead? Yuk! Unthinkable. There had to be one tea bag somewhere in these cupboards, and I was going to find it.

I searched frantically, and then again, this time more slowly and carefully. I had almost given up when there it was. Clinging to the side if a packet of Brie, almost invisible in its green and blue mould camouflage, a solitary, slightly ripped tea bag.

Did a drink ever taste more wonderful? Not in this life.

Mrs Red and I were brought up on tea, so naturally our own children had milky tea in their bottles before they could walk. My Daughter Sadie’s first word was “Mama” Her second, uttered as she swung her incredibly heavy glass bottle by the teat and hit me smack between the eyes as I lay sleeping one morning was “Boccy, tea.”

lol, I think most have been there with that last tea bag..lol

Red, your post and mention of tea caddy got me to wondering about tea leaves. When I was young we always had tea leaves and a strainer. Well sometimes we didnt have it strained when my mum went through her cup reading phase:) The lady next door told fortunes from the reminents of the unstrained tea and gave my mum some lessons:) We had loads of laughs in our house with tea:)
So why is it that tea leaves are suddenly posh? You can buy fancy silver straining balls that cost a fortune and are probably not even as good as your good old fashioned mesh strainers. The tea also stews much faster without the silver ball thingy..........lol  Right, I'm off to put the kettle on but I'm afraid its gonna have to be teabags:)
