I only watched the first half but Heskey was top class..and he has always been good upfront with Owen.

I personally thought it was backward step picking Heskey today though i was proved wrong, he played very well today and gave us a different option up front, as what are normally aimless punts at small strikers were held up for the midfield to join the game.
Back when Heskey was a regular I was one of the few people who thought he did a reasonable job for England.
I still remember from when he was a 16 year old, he terrorised Norwich in both fixtures including a hat trick (I think) at Leicester in one of the strangest games i have ever attended. Martin O'Neill had just left Norwich as manager because our chairman Robert Chase was too busy building a car park then investing in the team and refused to buy a young Dean Windass from Hull for about 300k. By the time the game at Leicester came round it was already known he would probably be installed as the next Leicester manager in front of Mike Walker, he who led Norwich to some of the best results in the clubs history not 2 years previously (he became our manager again about 6 months later). Both sides were being led by caretaker managers and we went 2 up in about 5 minutes. Then Emile ran us ragged and we lost 3-2, the game still sticks in the memory for being just plain weird.

I was there
on the strength of that game I think we went and signed Darren Eadie who scored for Norwich that day
Within a year he was injured, to remain permanently so before retiring
Heskey was always great for us, as long as he had a natural scorer next to him. One of MON's masterstrokes was to play Tony Cottee, long consigned to the scrapheap in Malaysian football, off him. Heskey caused all the hassle and Cottee added another two years to his career
Sadly for Emile he never quite lived up to the £11m price tag in Liverpool, perhaps due to a natural shyness that meant he was more suited to a provincial club like Leicester or Wigan than the pressures such a price tag involves.
He also got a bit heavy for a while, thats now gone again
Sadly for Leciester, MON was succeeded by Peter Taylor who blew said £11m including £5.5m on Akinbadbuyi

I always got the feeling Heskey was made a scapegoat for an underperforming england side in the same way that Seedorf was made a scapegoat for an underperforming Dutch side for a long time. Heskey on form is a top class player but he needs someone like Owen to play next to him and he hasn't had that with most clubs. Well done to him for taking his chance today but I feel Mclaren will probably stick someone else up front with Owen again..unfortunately for England

Surely Mclaren will not change the side for Russia. Neville has got a job on to get his place back.... Yes bye bye Neville, & please take your brother & best mate Becks with you, you're not needed anymore

Eadie was fantastic player for Norwich, he could literally rip defences apart on his own. Unfortunately he was a marked man when at Norwich and got fouled more than any player around. He was injury prone and to be honest Leicester took a risk buying him as his proneness to injury meant that he was never going to fulfill his massive potential. Oh and Ade "his fourth touch is getting better" Akinbiyi was another Norwich youth product but was never popular at Norwich and was moved on quickly.
