Hi, shamelessly seeking advice from anyone who can help...

My Delll inspiron 9200 laptop has a cracked motherboard, so I need to get a new one.

This is likely to be fairly expensive, so was wondering if anyone in the know could give me an idea of a good place to buy laptop motherboards at non-prohibitive prices.

Thanks in advance.  thumbs up

I suspect you'll be pricing up a new laptop before too long ..

Find out what the model number is then you can search for it.

Your best bet will probably be finding one on ebay that has a broken screen, they are usually not worth repairing.

How did it break? You dropped it... and you have house insurance right

Damn, this fella's good.  Was about to post the same advice about finding one with a broken screen.

It's like having a written-off car because it's been in rear-end shunt and the chassis is buggered.  The engine's still fine, and if there's another car with   an engine that's blown up - you can make one working car out of that.

House insurance is a good call as well.

Thanks for the advice folks. Much appreciated.

It looks like I can buy a motherboard for about 150 + 15 p&p then pay someone 10-20 quid to fit it. As I also need to replace the dvd drive for 30-40 quid, and get a replacement charger for 25-35 all in all it may cost 250 quid plus to bring it back to decent working order. Sick rake.

I'll look at broken monitor computers though to see if i can pick up a better deal.

Can't claim on house insurance sadly as well, I don't have any. 2 and a half years of lugging my laptop round all over the place was bound to take its toll eventually!

Thanks again...

If it's two and a half years old you may as well just buy a new one.

Where are you getting the replacement board from and what warranty are you getting. I can tell you that for £150 you are getting a good deal.  How do you know the board is cracked. Have you opened it yourself! ! !   It might be cheaper to trade it in on a better model with warranty.

What have you been doing to need all this new stuff!

You can get new laptops from around £300 (not the best spec though). What spec is an inspiron 9200? You can get a new inspiron 1501 for £349 or an inspiron 6400 for £359. You get a new warranty and every other bit of the laptop is new.

You can probably sell your laptop for spares on ebay. Who knows, it might make £100 if someone is after the screen.

I'd certainly think twice (or 10 times) before spending £250 on an old laptop.

House insurance would be similar price to a new cheap laptop, and cracked motherboard is easy to claim for = drop damage. You'll have to make sure accidental damage cover to laptops is included and there will probably be a £50 excess. Free house insurance, if you need it. If the Inspiron 9200 is a particularly high spec laptop then you might get a more expensive replacement (like for like or new for old or whatever!).
