Almost 12,000 raw eggs

This morning I had to take my Dads cat to the vet to be put to sleep. He was 17 years old and called Ted. Last week he had to go to the vet to have most of his teeth taken out as they were causing him pain, sadly the vet discovered that his kidneys were not functioning the way they should and due to his age the anesthetic worsened the condition. She put him on various drugs to try and help him recover, he was allowed home last night and by this morning he was almost gone. It was the kindest thing to do in the end.
I went to my Dads this morning and took him, it was easily the most upsetting thing I have ever had to do. Since 1990 Ted was part of my life and it is hard to stop feeling guilty about taking him to the vet this morning. I know it was the kindest thing in my head, but my heart feels awful right now. He will be cremated and I am sure my Dad will put the ashes around his favorite places in his Garden.
Ted was always a nice cat and had a great character. He was also very unlucky, he was run over when he was about 6 and was missing for a week, when we found him and took him to the vet he lost his tail and had to have his legs fixed. After this he battled on as if nothing had happened. A few years later he developed a tumor in his brain that we were told would kill him, but ten years later until this morning this had no negative impact on his life. When he was 12 , he had to have a few teeth removed after an accident. After going through all this, he was finally caught out by a kidney problem nobody knew about until recently. Whatever happened , he was a loving cat who always wanted a chat.
The reason for the title of this thread was Ted's addiction to eggs. When he was a kitten, he was very small and weak. When we took him for his check up at the vet when he was only a few months old, She advised we give him a raw eggs to build him up a bit. Her cats we were told loved raw eggs and perhaps they would help Ted build his strength . Well from 1990 until a few days ago, Ted ate two raw eggs every day. I am terrible at maths, but from my calculations that works out at about 12,000 raw eggs. He ate a wide mix of other foods , but always loved eggs the most. I wouldn't be surprised if his body had yoke running through it
.
He was a great cat and will be missed.

Hi Sark,
I have read your post with tears in my eyes.
We have lost a very good friend to us today.
My parents, many many years ago were asked if they would take a dog in (Brandy, a cocker spaniel)
They did so,he so needed a good home,he had been starved and abused to the point of nearly no return for him.
My parents loved him better over the years and as time went on he began to trust people again.
Pete and I have looked after him for my parents every time they have gone on holiday(3 times a year for 2 weeks) for as long as we have had the girls. He was part of our family.
He has been on the decline for many a month now, lastly being digonesd with diabeties.
My parents left him in my care 6 days ago to go on holiday to Cyprus for my Dads 70th birthday.
With all my lists and instuctions on how to inject the insulin ,they left with hopes of a nice holiday.
Within a day or two Brandy was clearly very ill and on my Dad's instuctions I took him to the vets.
Brandy died in his sleep last night at the vets. The dreaded call came at 9am this morning.
I have spent all day crying, one for the loss of him and two because he was in my care.
I have also had the dreaded thought that my Dad may blame me(did I do something wrong?)
I feel so sad that he died in my care, but my parents have rang and dont blame me at all, they have said I have always looked after him so well, it was just his time to go he was so old.
I wish he could have lasted a few more days so my parents could have seen him one last time, but it was not meant to be.
I know how you are feeling and my thoughts are with you.
Take care

hI Shelly,
thanks for that. I am sorry to hear about your bad news as well. It is sad your parents didn't get a chance to say goodbye, but I am sure he knew your parents loved him. Hope you are ok.
In some ways I am happy that Ted got to come home for one more night before being put down, atleast he spent his last night at home with people who cared about him. He had been in the vets for a few days and was surrounded by strangers, so I am pleased we had the chance to say goodbye the night before it was his time. To be honest, I am a dog person and although I always cared for Ted loads , I can't get out of my mind that he may have known this when he was alive. I am probably just being silly, but I worry that he knew I got along better with dogs. I loved Ted, but I spent more time with the dogs. If only I could go back and do things over I would dish out equal attention to everyone. My Dad says I am just being daft and he would have known, but I don't think I ever actually told him how much I cared for him until last night. I never realised until now the mistakes I have made. In the vets I couldn't stop crying and the nurse had to get me a glass of water. Since I was a tiny kid I have only cried a few times ( always with animals ), but today was heartbreaking.
