Eurovox - which one to buy?

You need a MAC address, not an apple mac. You need it most when it is raining, but ideally all the time.

eh?  What's one of those?  I was thinking along the lines of Kins picture there.  Clearly I'm a doofus and wrong.

I'm in a cable area but I don't have the cable service switched on - i.e. I cancelled my tv and went with Sky.  I still have the fittings there though, will the Eurovox still work or do I need virgin to switch something on?

Still very interested in the broadband options though

You mean you aren't signed up, not it isn't switched on.

If you plug your cable feed (you need a F connector to coax adapter) into your TV tuner and see if you can tune into BBC etc, you probably can. Which means your feed is active - and that's all you need.

In my living room I have a cable coming in from the Sky dish to the Sky box, to my tele.  I also have the redundant Cable box but it's jjust the box.   Do I plug one of these F connector things to the cable box and the other end into the Eurovox box which goes to the tele? 

I am technically challenged with things like this.

Do you have a normal arial on your roof, or one of those portable ones that is a loop on the top of your TV, that ends in a coax connector. That usually plugs into your TV tuner (your TV's tuner) to give you normal terrestrial channels. These channels are sent down the cable too, so you don't need an arial. If you have an adapter (or you could chop the end off and install a normal coax end - but I don't recommend this) then you can plug it into your TV, tune it in, and see if you get channels.

You just said you still have a cable box. If you plug this in, you should be able to get the free channels through it if the line is still connected (but I'm not certain on this).

It's 95% likely your cable is still connected. They rarely cut your feed, too much hassle.

You usually get one of those F type connectors to Coax with a eurovox.

The cable is manually switched on by an engineer in the exchange on or near your street, i'm 95% certain they do switch them off because when i first got my dodgy cable box i had to get a mate to turn it on (it had been used by the previous owner).
Just curious Rich but what's the difference between the eurovox and a modded cable box?

Eurovox is a type of modded box. There are 5ish popular ones. Eurovox is probably the most common.

They rarley turn the feeds off. Sometimes they do. A trick that a lot of people do if they don't have an active feed it sign up then cancel within 30 days and they usually don't turn the feed off again. Or some people sign up the the basic package, which guarantees a feed.
