Just remember all kids have something special about them

I have two daughters

Jessica is always top of the class and has to win in all sports

Daisy is not top of the class and is a Dolly Day Dream with two left feet

but she has such a talent for art and the arts that I am equally proud

will she follow in Jessica's footsteps? No

Would I want her to? No

I love them both the same and am equally proud

Yes, but the autism spectrum is huge and many ways of showing, William's main "thing" is obsession.

Yes tikay, often frustrated, often very happy, I'll try and get a pic up.

Awww you guys are GREAT im so pleased I found this forum...Thanks RFC (William) for that lovely post and yes snoopy Rainman was autistic. My boy who is now 10 is EXTREMELY intellegent, I can just see him as a geeky Univercity prof/researcher but he is a billy no mates who sees the worse in everything. My daughter is the real handful with language/learning difficulties she reads way beyond her years but doesnt understand what it means which is sad and boy has she got a temper. They are both lovely kids though... SO... bidding starts on ebay...GRAB YOURSELF A BARGAIN...only 99p for the pair with no reserve  Grin

Yes Robert, let's have a pic.

Here's my autism story.

I was playing golf with a good friend 5 or 6 years back, he mentioned his lad was autistic. Well,, that got us off on the wrong foot, 'cos I THOUGHT he said ARTISTIC, & blabbered on about the merit of artists for 10 minutes, anyway, I get out of it somehow.

I got to know the lad - he was, maybe, 18 or 20, lovely boy. Had an AMAZING memory, &, as Robert implied, possibly an obsession. He'd spend all day in hios bedroom, on the internet, learning & memorising stuff. He knew ALL the runners in every Epsom Derby since 1900!

So when we went to little 2 & 3 day golfing trips to places like Skeggy, the lad, though not a golfer, would come with us. We had nightly quizzes, & we could not let him enter the quizzes as a contestent, as he'd win them evey time, so he used to set the questionss. He had an awesome mind, & an incredible memory.

But he lacked - totally - social skills, &, to a degree, co-ordination of his limbs. You had to be SO careful what you said to him. In the bar at the golf club, if you said "go & get me a drink David (name changed) he'd trot off to the bar, walk BEHIND the bar, serve himself, & bring the drink back. This caused a ruction one night when the steward had a go at him, he simply said "but Tony said get me a drink".......

And on his way to & from the bar, he walked in a STRAIGHT LINE, no matter what lie betwen him & the bar. Drinks, chairs, tables, people, anything in his way he simply walked through. Carnage..... If you berated him about this, he simply could not grasp what the problem was.

The sad end to the tale is that his Father is well into his 60's, & worries constantly about the lad being looked after, once Dad passes on. The lad can't work, & because he's always been looked afer by Mum & Dad, he knows no other life. I gather the plan is to put him into some sort of protected environment, some sort of, I hate the word, but "home".

There are more heroes out there than one would ever dream. The kids, & the Mums & Dads. And STILL peeps insist on telling me their poker bad beats......

You got my boy down to a tee (excuse the golf pun), you tell him to go a bit faster and he runs, say slow down and he walks at snails pace. A typical example is one morning he put his shoes on wrong and i said to him your shoes are on the wrong feet, he bursts out crying and says these are the only feet I have got. You try explaining that one!!

it can only be worse if he turns out like another William you have met

I never know whether to laugh or cry when I see or hear these stories of autistic kids.

Young David was SO polite - it was always "yes please", "no thank you" he addressed strangers as Sir or Madam.

One day he was marching along & accidentally knocked an old lady clean off her feet. It never OCCURRED to him to see if she was OK, say sorry, he just walked on, oblivious.

His Father had a theory that autism was caused by the teeny weeniest little thing being amiss somewhere, it was almost like Dad was looking for a missing key, & he hoped one day to find it, & the kid would be fine. I mean, the lad WAS awesomely bright, he spoke perfectly normally, perfrct in every respect it seemed. But he just took everything completely literally. God moves in mysterious ways, they say.
