amateur phsycologists?

Why is it that we can't make ourselves do things we want to do?
E.g. Give up smoking, play disciplined poker, get fit etc etc

Er, gave up smoking, stopped drinking and lost a huge amount of weight when I was younger.
Ah, disciplined poker, fair point.

I'd say that either subconciously we don't
really
want to do those things. Otherwise, fear of failure maybe?

I agree with Claire. You really need to want to do something and wont if you dont have the internal drive. If you have conflict in your mind about wanting to do these things - you know you should but you cant really be bothered, you need to use some motivational techniques. this can start off with something simple like writing a pros and cons list of giving up the behaviour. for some people this tips the balance and they find an internal drive. theres a behaviour change model you can apply by 'prochaska and diclemente' called the 'stages of change'. ill attach a link to a questionaire. you fill it in with a certain behaviour in mind (say you want to stop drinking) and it will tell you the stage of change you are at and then what you can do to tip the balance....
this questionaire isnt the best as its on an alcohol site but its the best i can find. fill it in and email them and they should tell you where you are at. ive used psychological therapies like this in previous jobs so if you need any more psychological advice, im happy to point to in the right direction if i cant assist myself:)

In fact, to be honest, I didn't get past the "I agree with Claire" bit.
