Did you know there is an age limit to become a dentist?
While at work the other day I bumped into an old friend who I had known years ago. He told me for fourteen years he had worked as a joiner and he had gained a degree in biological sciences with the OU in his spare time and a bunch of other qualifications from night school. It was his intention to go onto dental school and qualify as a cosmetic dentist. However he was declined for dentistry from all the Scottish dental schools as he was too old at 31 when he applied. He is 34 now and works in a lab. He didn't have the option to travel far away to study as he has a wife and three young kids in school here.
What difference does it make if the applicant is 18 years old or 31? both are equally capable of becoming good dentists
I thought with the shortage of dentists in the UK, dental schools would love to receive a well qualified applicant .
As far as I know there is no upper age limit to become a vet and they are just as skilled/trained as a dentist
I was really surprised by this

I have a friend who's a dentist. He's never happy - always looking down in the mouth.

so just have your teeth checked out by a vet then. Dentists are money hungry couldn't be proper doctors anyways

lol, I was referring to the training. To become a vet is must be just as difficult to qualify as it is to study dentistry? After all vets have to know the anatomy of countless animals . I am not saying vets are more skilled or more intelligent than dentists as they are completely different, so it is impossible to compare the two. It just surprised me that there appears to be no age limit to become a vet, however he was turned down due to his age for dentistry

I wondered how long it would take before you mentioned vets in your post. I suppose they are very similar to dentists - spending a great deal of their time looking at canines.

I believe that there is no statutory upper age limit but rather it is in the area of 'policy' for each responsible authority.
Strangely there is a statutory lower age limit in that a licence cannot be granted to someone who has not yet reached 21!!! Given the entry requirements and the training it would seem an unlikely occurence lol.
