George's protestations remind me of a story of a Glasgow character who found himself in a good chip position in the main event in Birmingham several years ago.

Mr CG called a pre-flop raise from the chip leader and when the raiser bet the flop he called.  The raiser bet the turn and CG raised all in - a substantial bet that would have damaged the leader who naturally decided to have a think.

CG then stood up and shouted "Call me!"  The leader thought.

CG "CALL ME!" This time banging the table - still no decision from the other player

CG "CALL ME IF YOU'VE GOT THE GUTS!" 

This final harang inspires the opponent to push in his chips at which point CG put his hands to his face (looking much like "The Scream" by Munch) - and exclaims "Oohh noo, I was bluffing"

Thing like that just don't happen in tournaments nowadays...

to date he has had his bluff called and won every time
i may not like the guy(bad suntan and suit) , i certainly dont respect him(should represent his constituents more than other issues) and for sure i suspect there is no such thing as a totally clean politician...but i`ll defend his right to protest his innocence(until proven in a court of law otherwise) against american priveliged committe members hurling accusations across the atlantic against our elected officials in a smokescreen sitting.

also the fact that he seems to have successfully sued every person/organisation who has accused him to date .

the american business and elected community would do well to remember the old"people who, live in glass houses" adage. Clean yer own house first...

Not a "Gorgeous George " fan myself either patman, but I've got to totally agree with you there.

Pat, I've got to say that the people I know who've had cause to go to Gorgeous George for help as their MP have found him outstanding & very attentive & quick to take whatever action he could. (I drink next to his old constituency office, he's still very popular in Anderston as 'the only one who'd get off his arse for us'). Even when something didn't come under him he'd go through it, how to deal with it, who to go to & even email the relevant person to let them know that someone was coming to them with a problem. I've not heard many reports of that from other MPs.

GG's problem is he's a proffessional pain in the arse - and so gets up the noses of the rulers, the press & anyone else in a position of power... lots of mud then gets thrown & some sticks.

Last time he went to the states the news reports of him taking on the senate committee were played in the pub like it was a football match & people were cheering him on!! - Some of that is anti-US & anti-war sentiment - but a lot was support for a damn good local MP as well.
