I'm off to Norway next month and during a planning conference last week I was told that, despite being way inside the Artic Circle, we will have wireless internet on the camp. However it will not be DSL,  but dial up connection.

Bargain I thought, with a bit of spare time on my hands I can loaf and play poker for days on end.

Now then, do I need to do anything special when playing via dial up? The main site I use is Stars, howvere I sometimes dabble with Bluesquare and Blonde. Is the connection fast enough to cope??? Will it matter that it is wireless dial up and there will probably be a load of other blokes connecting at the same time?

Do I need to load up different software?

All advice gratefully accepted.

If I don't play poker it means I have to go get fit cross country skiing for days at a time - and we can't have that...

Dial up is fine for poker..yeah it's slow and you shouldn't have 3 sites open at the same time..but you can get by ..stay away from the fast tables though.

The main thing you'd need to do is..bring a hot water bottle..I'm told the artic circle gets pretty chilli this time of year Smiley

Hmmmm I'm not a tech-head, but dial-up wireless???  I suppose this means that the wireless router is connected to the net by dial-up.  If so there might be a problem if there are several ppl logged on as there wouldn't be enough bandwith to cope.  Dial-up often has an auto disconnect after a certain time so you wld have to look out for that.

oh yikes..didn't even read that it was wireless dial-up and used by loads.

you're screwed if that is indeed the case (Though I'd think the army would have something better than dial-up in place, surely?

Hit -51 c last year, without windchill...

Go out for survival course on tuesday and then 3 months in Jan. Not a worry as I used to be Artic Ski n Survival instructor :-)

only -51?..pfft no wonder this country is going to the shits if they keep sending you boys to the easy spots there then...in Glasgow on a Saturday night you'll find women who dress in a mini skirt and a top and have flabby bits hanging out in those conditions.
