Is this an automatic refund or do we have to make a claim somehow?

As bankruptcies go this is piss-poor! Any self-respecting insolvents would take our money with them - what is the world coming to?

I'm guessing its not them. More likely its that body that all the travel agents etc have to register with...they guarantee refunds etc if the agents go bust. APTA? I think...something like that.

Anyway...having a look at flights:

Direct: Virgin from London - £453.80 (Travel on Wed 2nd, return Wed 9th), or BMI from Manchester - £470 (Travel Tue 8th, return Wed 16th)

Indirect: Delta from London - £357 (Travel on Wed 2nd, return Thu 10th)

They were the cheapest I could find...but I'll have another look.

IF YOU HAVE NOT YET BEGUN YOUR TRAVEL, BUT HAVE BOOKED TICKETS:  In order to assist in expediting refunds by the credit card companies, MAXjet is providing notification - to the extent possible - that our service to you was not delivered nor will be delivered. In addition, however, we encourage you to contact your credit card company or travel agency directly to expedite your refund.

Forced credit card refunds. No way will MaxJet be automatically refunding people.

I know Tikays to blame for most things but to blame this on APAT seems a bit harsh to me.

By the way, happy Christmas all and hope you get alternative flights sorted soon.

Anyone thinking of re-booking with virgin should consider joining the virgin Flying Club (free & instant) and then buying 2000 airmiles for £45. The discounted (miles plus money) flights may save you more than the £45.

eg. Fri 04/01 - 11/01  Normal fare £465.40  Discounted Fare £337.40

I already looked at that, as I am a flying club member. Sadly, all the flights around the time that we're planning on going have gone.

My faith in the banking system has been restored. I paid for the flights on Maxjet with my debit card not my credit card and I was worried that the same protection would not apply. However after posting off the Maxjet bankrupcy statement and original invoice, LloydsTSB have refunded all the monies to my account this morning. Have rebooked with American Airlines, Chezger are on their way to Vegas.

I always thought that debit card payments were like cash, no comeback, seems I was wrong and therefore it make no difference which card I use. Saying that I did pay American Airlines with the credit card  dont river me

It does make a difference.  You were fortunate this time, but it can take a lot longer to get your money back in many situations - if you get it back at all.

Also, pay on the right credit card and you get other benefits (such as air miles, money back, points, etc.) - the only downside is if they add a fee for credit card processing (if it then costs more than paying by debit card).
