Im after a new TV and want as big a screen as i can get for about £800, what would you go for smaller screen LCD prob be 37inch or go for a 42/44inch plasma.
My main prob is im not too sure of the difference between plasma and LCD obviously ive heard LCD is better but why??.

lcd by a mile.,.,.,
ive had both right from \the start.,.,.plasma+lcd.,.,lcd better pic and better if the sun is shinning in your room no reflection,,,or not much,,,,plasma looks to shiney for me tbh.....LCD wins for me,,,
i started with the 37 inch aquos for £4k when it was first launched about 4-5 years ago,,,,then to plasma for bigger pic,,,then 3 months in had to pull it out of the wall and put a new 47 lcd,,,..,.,then moved to cyprus and left them all behind lol.,.,.,
just bought a 40 sony bravia for £600 ish,,,,im sure you would get a 46 inch bravia in the uk/online for under £800.,.,.,.,good luck

You have answered own question really correctly IMO
LCD Deffo upto 40"
Plasma for anything bigger
Had the same budget 2 days ago for the same thing, in Currys was a 50" Plasma on sale for £899 looked great picture looked good and was sold until i asked what else, he showed me the same screen for £1000 when i asked the difference he said the £899 was lower grade than this mid range? SO decided against a low grade plasma, and decided on a Samsung 1080p 100htz 40" LCD from Comet priced up at £799 in sale, when i said I was going back to Curry's to compare again he immediately dropped the price to £725, told him to make it £650 and he had a deal ............... DONE

Plasma for 42" and over but LCD is closing the gap, especially if you want to watch sport or play xbox etc through it.
Best thing to do is demo the tv in a shop first then go looking for best price once you have chosen the model.

I have recently bought a 40 inch Panasonic (plasma) and my parents have bought an equivlant Philips LCD, and have to say that the LCD kicks the arse of my plasma.
Picture clarity, colour, size and weight of unit are far superior on the LCD IMO.
Have to say though the gizmo's(screen in screen, timers etc) on the Panasonic are outstanding.

Try Richer Sounds if you have one.
When you have found the TV you want at the best price get John Lewis to price match it because they give a free 5 year guarantee.

Always worth considering John Lewis. If they stock it, they'll beat Internet prices (as long as delivery is included). Of course on top of that there's the guarantee and fantastic customer service.
(here ends the party political broadcast on behalf of the John Lewis Party).

Also it depends how long you think you want it to last, there are cheap lcd's HD ready but only 720, IMO you need a 1080i or even a 1080p to cover everything nicely for sky HD (which is only 720 AFAIK, but prob will increase) HDDVD, games consoles and PC use.
Contrast is also important on LCD's go for 10,000:1 or above the higher the better.
I was reading on one forum that John Lewis was doing a price match from somewhere for a sony 40" (decent spec)and PS3 for £899. Worked out better to get from JL anyway as they give you a 5 yr warranty!!!
