I am one of the last minute tax filing plonkers ..... I am also one of those plonkers who totally forgot about class 4 NI contributions. Only my second year of filing and last year I didnt have much class 4 NI to pay as part of the year I was employed and most of the NI was covered in PAYE.


arrgghhhhhhhhh gotta find another lump sum on top of what I had already worked out I would have to pay - and got find it by 31st Jan .......

 


ah well, at least I'll be prepared for next year, lesson learnt and all that lol

LOL just had my usual frantic January call to my accountant. I'm awaiting her call to tell me the damage the IR will want this year.

Ditto, well, not the call bit, will chase up tomorrow.

You don't have to pay it by Jan 31st HoF, you get a bit after to drag it out and delay payments if you like.  You get quite a few letters before they get real shirty - usually sometime around July-September!

I've always paid on the 31st, best to keep em happy eh! But this year if I'm hit for a real whopper, well I'll just have to get drag it out.

It actually isnt.

The interest you get charged by the IR - you wont get that rate from the money in the bank.

Be careful about constantly delaying. As well as interest on your outstanding balance, when I was in the Revenue we used to pick out "non-compliant" taxpayers for Enquiry, nothing more satisfying than tying you up in red tape for 12 months+

Whats worse (for me) is working my arse off in January to get the tax returns done (after chasing them since august!) only to get the same old story when they get my bill together with their tax bill.

"Its just after christmas,,,,,,, how can I pay that much tax?,,,,,, I will sort your bill out after" - usual shit.

Had a taxi driver phone me up 2 years ago (around the 20th January) asking if I could do his books and tax return.

Yes, I said but you will need to get them to me asap.

Well 28th Jan he bought a shoe box round full of bits of paper - litterally a shoe box!

Managed to get it done, he came to sign the return on 31st so I could file it online.

I gave him the bill (only £400) and he said to me "Can I pay you by DD over 10 months?"

"Sure" I replied.

I then said, "can you take me to Scotland tomorrow, wait and bring me back? Oh and can I pay you by DD over 10 months?"

"Oh like that is it? I suppose you want paying in full then?" He replies

Nod from me.

Had to laugh, watching his face light up at the prospect of a Scotland wait and return job - then watching it drop as he twigged what I was really saying.

He is still a client and now pays every year no problem.
