What was the right way to play this hand?

Six left and top 3 pay.
BB is chip leader and has 4800 chips. I am currently 2nd with 3200 chips.
Blinds are 100/200
First to act has 800 chips left and goes all in, rest fold to me in SB and I have
 
I call and BB also calls
Flop is
   
I decide to check it down, but if I hit the flush then i would make a bet.
BB bets 1200
There is now 3600 in the pot and i am assuming that maybe he has a Queen, is also chasing the flush or is bluffing.
I decide to fold and a heart comes on the turn. Easy in hindsight to regret not being still in the hand, but:
Should I have bet more pre flop?
Should I have bet post flop?

Either way there's no chance I'm folding on the flop. Probably would have checkraised all in, knowing that if BB folds I pick up his 1200 in the side pot.

I re pop the pre flop all in bet to isolate, but as you've played the hand i'm not gonna fold on this flop

BB is giving you the better than needed odds for your flush / overcard..

As played shove the flop I also agree with the allin preflop to isolate.

Looking back have to agree that I should have been more aggressive to isolate there one player. Guess only reason I didn't was that the player to my left had me covered and if he had a hand I only had ace ten suited.
With the post flop situation, assuming he hit part of the board (he actually had a Queen) then I am behind. Do I really want to put all of my chips in when I am behind? I can't see that he would have folded as pot committed by then.

If you openshove he may make some incorrect folds. If he snaps with top pair then you have 12 outs anyway. If you check and he bets then you never have any FE and it isn't like you can ever fold.

So get them in first.

Depending slightly on other players stacks I would iso shove pre.

Regardless of other stacks i would isolate pre-flop. Asking for trouble by flat calling pre, ur inviting the bb in with almost any 2.

Push on the flop as the likelyhood is you will call an all in so get them in first. he may even fold!

So post flop, when would you check it down and when would you bet out? (Again ignoring my pre-flop play)
