Does anyone use an ultra mobile PC to play poker on?

If so what machine, pro's and con's please.

The concept appeals to me but due to the current prices I don't want to waste my time.

Cheers.

I just plug my nokia n95 into my laptop.. sorted.   t-mobile unlimited data is only a tenner a month and nokia n95 has a built in modem that lets you use the phone to connect.   much better than paying for one of those dedidicated broadband modems and the connection is easily quick enough to play on poker sites.  (except pkr.com) which is seriously graphics intensive.

that way you can use any laptop/notebook you want

I have a sony U50

Mainly use it in bed or whilst watching TV. It has a 800x600 resolution which is good for 1 table. The samsung Q1 which I was considering too has a small resolution and therefore I ruled it out.

The U50 you could never buy anywhere than in Japan so they are a bit hard to get, but I got mine off ebay a few months ago for only £260. It doesn't have a built in keyboard, but you don't need that for poker.

It's light and the extended battery lasts 4-5 hours.

I've recently bought an ASUS EeePC, has a 7" screen and costs around £250.  I installed XP on it though, as it ships with a flavour of Linux, which is no good for poker.  I play Mansion and Full Tilt on it just fine, using the tool to change the resolution to 800x600 (default is 800x480).  I can't recommend it highly enough, but the problem is getting XP on in the first place, it's a bit of a pain.

I was able to play the Gala Java client on the default Linux OS though, via the web browser.

I'm very interested in this. How difficult to install XP?

How well does it run with XP?

What's battery life like?

Can you get a car-charger/adapter?

Please.

Do Dell do one of these?     I can't get onto the Dell website for some reason,  it keeps coming back as an error page.

I used to always buy Japanese electrical/electronic,etc goods.  They are excellent and for years I wouldn't buy anything other than Sony, however I am now boycotting all Japanese products due to their stance on whaling.  One person may not make a difference, but it makes me feel better and I am sure there are scores of people out there doing the same thing.

I also had a look at getting one of these mini PC things to play poker on recently but was confused what was good or bad .

Any decent non Japanese devices worth looking at?

I hope you're boycotting the following as well:

Stuff made in China - for their human rights infringements
Stuff made in the US - for their human rights infringements
Stuff made in the UK - for their human rights infringements

Surely people are just as important as whales?  Also, Sony and other Japanese manufacturers aren't actually the ones doing the whaling.

Non-Japanese handheld PCs?  Good luck!

This looks like a good solution and a lot cheaper than the likes of the Samsung. Do you have Poker Tracker running on this aswell or is that too much of a stress for it?

I don't have poker tracker on it, I think it would probably manage if you just have one site and PT open, but it is only a celeron 900Mhz with 256MB RAM. The sony U70 looks the same but with a bit higher spec and would do better.

From April you will be able to buy the eeePC preinstalled with Windows XP: http://www.rm.com/Primary/Products/product.asp?cref=PD1030046.

There are loads of sites detailing how to DIY. The 800x480 res puts me off though.

Cybertim-

I have always been pleased with Nokia products in the past.  Makes me wonder now why I switched!  Do you have any more info about the n95?  What's the going rate, stats, functions, and all that?  I am just a newbie here, but I am eager to learni!

Is there a model that gives you a 'one up' in a poker hand??  Wink

Thank...... and Cheers!

Elonex are releasing an eeePC like machine for £99 shortly.

Cybertim - how well does the phone -> pc link work?

I know have unlimited web on my phone so wouldn't mind this for the odd time I need a connection on the move. I know you have to be careful to make sure you're connecting over the right connection on the phone as some people have been racking up bills of many thousands of pounds!

I was also interested in an Asus EEE but the screen res. put me off. Think I'll wait till I can get at least native 800x600. What's the Tool you mention EyeballKid?

 - From Wikipedia "At CES 2008, Asus confirmed that new models would be released in Q2 with new features which would include WiMax, and the option of a 7, 8, or 9 inch displays.[35]"

Hopefully the new models will have a better native resolution. Great idea though - they're tiny.

Please.

The difficulty with installing XP is down to the fact that the EeePC only has 4Gb disk space, of which a standard XP install would take up about 3Gb worth.  There is a free tool called nLite that allows you to remove all the bits of XP you don't need, so that it takes up less space.  It works a treat, but it took me 3 attempts before I had an install that had everything I needed!  So a bit of time and effort was required.  It might well be worth waiting on the new versions with XP pre-installed.  Particularly as you also need an external CD/DVD drive to do the install in the first place (I picked a cheap one up for £30).

It runs fantastically well with XP, I've had no problems whatsoever.  I upgraded the RAM to 2Gb from the standard 512Mb, only about £40 from Play.com.

Battery life is about 3 and a half hours with Wi-Fi enabled.

You can get car chargers and accessories from Clove Technologies, haven't used them myself, but I hear they are good.

The tool I mentioned is the ASUS EeePC Utility, that ships with the machine.  It lets you switch from 800x480 to 800x600 via the Windows taskbar.  When running Mansion or Full Tilt, I always go into 800x600.
