ok i'm pretty good with a pc but this has got me sumped so if anyone here can help i'll be eternally gratefull and beer at the blonde bash will be on me lol
When i came home from work last night i discovered that the shared pc i'm using had crashed, so i duly rebooted and discovered that it now takes 20 minutes plus to reboot (its not a slow machine) and when windows does eventually load theres no sign of my taskbar or desktop. I can open task manager and discover explorer.exe is chomping 50% of my cpu but cant do anything else.
Anyone got any ideas??? seriously tho please PM if need be

how about disabling everything but explorer in msconfig? oh you have no task bar, how about closing everything with task manager (except explorer)

WinXP? From task manager you can press the "new task" button down the bottom in the applications tab. type msconfig in the box that appears and press enter. Does that load up? if so we may be able to play ball

Why don't you just do a restore point if you are on xp?

That would be an obvious solution Heid, however if he can only access the task manager, he will be unable to reach the System Restore panel

Sounds nasty whatever it is .. that's a good couple of hours under the bonnet <intake of breath>. Good luck chaps

Just restore the harddisk from one of the daily backups, 30 mins tops.
What, you don't do backups?
