Pocket pair and a paired flop

Ladies and Gents,

Looking for a bit of advice in general here, example hand as follows (not real)

Folds round to you on the button/cut-off, you've got  , raise to 3/3.5xBB, call from SB or BB.

Flop; 

OOP caller bets 1/2 - 2/3 of the pot at you.

In you opinions what's the best play here? I know the main answer is "it depends on the caller's playing style and your image" but generally what do you reckon is the most +EV move here.

Is caller; a) floating the flop, b) made a loose call and paired the  , c) has a pocket pair of his own and is leading out to protect, d) hit trip J's and disguising the strength with a bet?

I've found myself in this situation quite a few times in tourney's recently and I'm sure I'm leaking chips, I'm pretty tight so I know that opponents will play at me as there's more of a chance that'll I'll fold, so a and b are highly possible.

i know it's player specific, but in general and good advice peeps?

If I have the J I lead out about 95% of the tijme here as I'm hoping you'll come over the top....then again...against some players you probably should come over the top but you have to know the player you are playing first. Nobody I know leads out with a bare 4 here BTW.

Generally this is a pretty safe flop for you and to fold here would be too weak. (though, like I said I always lead out with the J so I would say that)..

are we full ring or 6 max BTW?

Cheers Boldie, have been playing both 6max and full ring recently, as I'm quite tight, I like full ring so I can pick my spots and worry less about pressure from the blinds, but have been playing 6max on Sky a bit recently as well.

I'm more inclined to go over the top on 6max as the pressure to defend blinds with junk and out-play post-flop is greater, especially as most people easily pick me as the one of the more passive at the table.

My default is to call most of the time here as this is Way Ahead/Way behind spot.

Folding is out of the question as we have the best hand far too often to pass.

Raising is more interesting and then it comes down to it depends on our oppos tendancies. Against complete numpties we can raise for value as they will stack 4x and smaller pps plus other random rubbish. Against alot of comptent player we are just folding out worse and getting called/raised by better which is awful and the arguement against raising imo.

As a caveat when playing at higher levels esp cash metagame comes into this alot where we can raise for value as with someone Alex he will raise a high proportion of donk bets and therefore 99 is actually near the top of his range. Therefore opponents will call/stack off lighter.

This is a brilliant post I really like this! FWIW when I first saw the post I thought raise but the way ahead/way behind scenario is very relevant and never crossed my mind when first thinking about the hand.

Raise your 99 every time. Your hand is vulnerable and you need to protect it. You could also get called by worse hands.
