Premier League footballer Joey Barton has been jailed for assault and affray.

Barton, 25, was arrested in Liverpool on 27 December 2007 after he was involved in a confrontation outside a McDonald's restaurant in the city.

The midfielder, of Foxbank Close, Widnes, admitted the charges last month but reporting restrictions were only lifted on Tuesday.

He appeared at Liverpool Crown Court where he was jailed by a judge for six months.

Is 6 months '6 months', or suspended, or like 28 days?

Its a proper 6 months, which will hopefully ( ) mean he'll be out in 2 or 3. (If he is still an employee of NUFC at that point)

It'll be intersting to see how his court appearance for the Dabo thing goes in June.

He doesn't deserve to be a pro player.

I can't understand why they couldn't have sentenced him for both at the same time?

I could never understand how he would defend it there were 20+ witnesses, what were they going to say it wasn't him? At least he has owned up, although probably to get a shorter sentence.

Totally agree.

The poker league I play in has, as one of it's players, a magistrate. We got on to many a subject on saturday night, one of them being donkey, chav, feckwit lowlifes..... The magistrate confirmed that if the donkey, chav, feckwit, lowlife pleads guilty then that individual is likely to receive a reduced sentence. This is for two reasons:

a: It's to the donkey, chav, feckwit, lowlifes credit that he/she admitted their guilt, and

b: The courts save money and time processing a guilty plead.

Personally, I'd prefer to see these donkey, chav, feckwit, lowlifes introduced to prisons such as this one.....

Rant over, need to go lay down......

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL at you seeming to think this is some huge revelation, you really needed a magistrate to confirm for you that a person is likely to get a lighter sentence for pleading guilty rather going to trial and being found guilty? that's a rudimentary convention of criminal law.

But WHY is it a rudimentary convention of criminal law ? Why should some t*sser get a lesser sentence for pleading the obvious ? How have we let the criminal justice system get so lax and soft in it's treatment of these sh*t for brains ?
