I think it's disgraceful the way that MLS have decided to remove the goalkeepers to make it more exciting - it takes a lot of the skill out of the game.

LMFAO- seriously but why is the goalkeeper up does anyone know?? did the team really need to score to get anything or was it a meaningless league game or something(wouldnt surprise me to try and stir up more Beckham mania over there)

Yes, but the point is that in the NASL all teams have to play ten minutes without goalies. This articifical move adds to excitement obviously, but detracts from a "pure" game. Its interesting the tactical means with which teams counter this rule..often playing seven at the back for these periods and two teams have even brought in Olympic divers to their squad and are training them to save with their heads.

Interesting, but I hope FIFA resist the temptation to make it a worldwide rule.

They don't have draws in the US - so if the other team had equalised they would have got a 35 yard shootout for 1 point.

Quote
From Wikipeadia - Also implemented was the use of shootouts to resolve tie games. These best-of-five contests pitted a player 35 yards from goal with five seconds to put the ball past a goalkeeper; if needed the shootout headed into extra frames. A winning team received one standings point (as opposed to three for the regulation win).

Haha

The New England Revolution, managed by Steve Nicol, have Olympic Gold medalist in high board diving Greg Louganis as their goalkeeping coach.

Interesting times in North American soccer.
