Quote
A MAN has been gunned down in a shooting outside Edinburgh's famous Maybury Casino late last night.
Police confirmed that the man sustained head injuries following the incident at the casino just before midnight.

The 62-year-old was rushed to hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life- threatening.

A large spray of blood was clearly visible just yards from the casino entrance this

morning. Police have established large cordon around the building and a cleaning crew was outside the casino mopping up the steps.

More officers are due to be dispatched this afternoon when a thorough search of the grounds will commence.

Customers filling up at the Shell Garage across the road from the Maybury had heard rumours of a "drive-by" gun attack.

One onlooker said: "We heard they removed a number of cars this morning following a drive-by shooting."

But neighbouring residents said they were in the dark as to what had taken place during the night.

Several people departing for taxis, cars and buses in the opposite estate on North Gyle Terrace said they heard nothing during the night.

A spokeswoman for Gala Casinos, which owns the venue, said: "I can confirm there was an incident there last night and we are working with police."

A police spokesman added: "A man was shot last night outside the Maybury Casino. He sustained head injuries but they are not though to be life-threatening.

"He was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary before being transferred to another hospital.

"We would appeal for any witnesses to come forward with information."

A sign outside the casino door is advertising a Mafia themed murder mystery night on June 27.

The casino is one of the most popular in the city. Thanks to its location near the Gyle, it is a regular destination with both Lothians residents and those who travel through from the west of Scotland to gamble.

Its position on South Maybury Road also makes it easily accessible from Fife and Edinburgh Airport.

The casino currently opens from 4pm and shuts at 5am most days. It recently lost out in its bid to become the first in Scotland to extend its opening hours beyond the Government guidelines of midday to 6am.

The extension was opposed by Church of Scotland leaders, with critics saying allowing round-the-clock gambling was akin to handing unlimited supplies of heroin to a drug dealer.

Last July a man was jailed for ten years for the attempted murder of a former Hibs player outside the Clermiston Inn, not far from the casino in Rannoch Road.

Labourer Nicky Robertson, 20, blasted Jamie Ewart with a sawn-off shotgun as he celebrated his former team's CIS Cup Final victory outside the pub.

Nothing quite like logical reasoned debate leading to sensible decisions.

To be fair..you are talking about people who believe the world was created in 6 days by a magical all knowing, all powerful being..who then needed a bit of rest.

Well, actually it's more like extending the hours of already legal heroin shops so that they can open in the morning.

I've been campaigning for that for ages..now where do I go when I want a shot at 9 AM?
