I once bought my Gran a Canary for Christmas,
I went round on boxing day and asked her how it was and she said
"It was lovely, the meat just fell away from the bone and melted in your mouth"

Not to the local pet shop apparently..the local Pets R us sure as hell didn't sell any birds.."We stopped doing birds" the lady said with a blank look on her face.

In fact all they sold was a skinny hamster, a fat rabbit and LOADS of fish...and this was a fairly big store.

I remember going to a pet shop about a year ago and looking at the canaries and seeing that they cost £30...I though "Fuck me, 30 quid for a bloody canary? I remember when they were £2.50!"...and I walked off after that.

We do want a canary now though and we're looking for one but noone sells birds anymore...and I can't find a breeder anywhere in West Lothian.

Do any of you guys know where there is a breeder or decent pet shop (MUCH prefer a breeder) in Glasgow/Edinburgh area?

Try Norwich.

The guys that run the site breed canaries though - so just contact them & they'll have birds available at some point - especially the not good enough for show birds which they won't breed from.

If you want it to sing get a cock bird. (Hen's don't sing) If you want it to sing spectacularly, get a Roller canary, and be prepaired to be amazed. If you want a canary that can change colour, get a red factor canary, and if you want a conversation piece, get a Gloster (Gloucester) canary.

Alternately if you're looking for something that changes colour and sings Michael Jacksons greatest hits thumbs up

We're thinking a male Red Factor.
We used to keep canaries (and LOADS of other birds) when I was younger and MrsB is allergic to cats and dogs but should be OK with canaries..unfortunately she suffers from, what I shall call, Kev's disease...she can't stand yellow..so that rules every bright yellow canary out Sad

I haven't told MrsB yet about my idea to build an avery in the garden....she'll get hooked on this little bugger though and before you know it we won't have a shed anymore Smiley
