How do you guys usually prepare for a major tournament?

When the schedule is busy, and when the schedule is lax, do you do anything different or do you have a set routine? Or do you not bother preparing at all. All opinions welcome!

I prepare for any competition (from pub quizzes to poker to playing 10-pin bowling against my Dad) the same way - get clothes ready & ironed, wash, shave... basically get everything right before I go.

My Dad noticed me doing it before a big pub quiz (they used to be quite serious for good money, pub v pub back home). He was pleased as that's how he prepared before a big football game (he played proffessional) - I think that's the first time he noticed something where I took after him (I'm crap at football Sad ).

I'm glad you've asked this becasue I've noticed sometihng - when I prepare this way I'm putting on my 'game face' - I've not been doing it some nights before Cincins & not played as well.

I maybe need to think more about getting my mind straight for the game...

I like to not turn up the venue too early.
I found hanging around for ages beforehand only serves to build any tension I may be experiencing.

Use the breaks to go outside and get fresh air, there is no substitute for it especially as major tournaments usually have a lot of people in a room, it can get quite stuffy.

If you can't be well rested before it starts, at least make sure you are well fed. I experienced what can happen when you're not.

I had a mild panic attack earlier this year near the end of the £100 rebuy at the gutshot. I'd just doubled up twice in a row and my hands were shaking so much I couldn't stack my chips. Someone asked me if I was ok and I opened my mouth but no words came out. Left the table had some water, got some air, and allowed myself to get blinded off for 20 minutes till I re-gained control of myself. During this time, I was talking to some cockney dealer who offered me some helpful advice. It sounded bloody obvious but it helped me get myself together and salvage a 7th place finish.

"Just play your cards, don't worry what happens. All you can do is play your cards."

I told him that the next day, before the main event, I wouldn't come in and play online poker during the day, as I had done for the rest of the week. Instead I'd maybe relax by taking a walk round London, doing the whole touristy thing. He had a pearl of wisdom there too.

"Sod that mate, just stay in bed!"
