I'm playing live, 12 players left, so approaching bubble


Two tables of six

Blinds 600-1200...I have 27,000 left after posting BB

Button raises to 5,000 with 23k behind

Small Blind flat calls after dwelling with 16k behind

I'm in BB with  Ah

Marginal, don't particularly want to play it out of position, but Button has passed marginal situations and SB is a tight player

I re-raise to 12k


My thinking.....Button has to have an absolute monster to call with SB behind him

SB hasn't re-raised...he can't have a huge hand, should pass anything marginal approaching bubble


Button dwells...calls

SB calls

At the conclusion of the hand

Button claims he called with  (mucked post flop)

SB turns over 

I think these are both horrible calls ( ) what happened next is immaterial

However.....is this the right sort of situation to attempt a squeeze play?

Is the value of the Squeeze play now lower than it was, with everyone aware of it and doing it?

a raise pre flop and a flat call, the squeeze is to re-raise attempting to make it difficult for initial raiser to call with the flat caller behind him. Once raiser passes, the fact that the flat caller of the raise hasn't re-raised before you act signals weakness and suggest in most cases a pass to your re-raise

Ok, so I am interested now.. is this what I did last night to my chagrin on the 10k?

mid position did a tentative raise, and the rest of the place clams up to me on BB - me being new agressive me...

It does'nt matter what hand you have... as you said you don't want to call with this hand!

I would make the raise bigger than 12k in that spot i think! have you reraised only 7k more? But the play certainly works on the net... i like to test people out for passing in the early stages, the squeeze play works on the flop/turn and river aswell. you just have to pick up on the bets...

Gamblor, you make a good point...so you have 27k, it's 5k to you...i raised to 12k leaving me 15k or 12x bb.....how much do you re-raise and not leave yourself crippled if it backfires?

I don't think you can be scared about going out/crippling yourself in this spot... I want that money in the middle i'l be making it at least anoth 10k to go maybe 17k as i want them to expect me to lump the rest in...

Remember your doing this because you think there weak, so play the hand with strength! and pass if i ever do it to you

i tried this last night in the poker cruise 19 left in comp  11 get a seat   im 6th in chips 3rd on the table

blinds 600-1200     4th position makes it 3000   6th pos flat calls      i have a hand QQ but think if i move in i can take it right there  and pick up the 7800

i discover that the inital raiser has AA and im cripled as he takes 2/3 of my stack

vs a button raiser and a sb caller with unknown info i'm probably all in here with my 27k. If you make a move need to be 100% commited. You have a high % of having the best hand also.
At It make very good squeeze plays his advice is good here.

thanks JP and Ian...i played it too reticently...I saw the weakness that necessitated the squeeze play but was pre-occupied with leaving myself a playable stack if it backfired...AJ being such a marginal hand

Thought about this post when near the bubble tue night on stars 180 player $20 sit n go (good little tourney this on the sit n go multi tab NOT the tourney tab).
50 players left im the BB with 5k and QTo. min raise from under the gun (4k). SB (4k) calls I raise it up to 2 x pot (about 3k). They both fold.
did they fold because we were near the bubble? or were they 'good players?!' anyway it worked and thanks for this post. It was easy to spot the situation to make this move (regardless of my cards) after reading this.
