How do you go about it? How do you get a web address and all that sort of thing?? What are the costs involved in setting up a basic website?

Thanks in advance

I know you can start by using someone like  www.1and1.co.uk  to buy the actual address. You will find that .co.uk addresses are about £3 for a couple of years..

As to actually building a site I have no idea, i have redirected the address to other places..

You can pick up a domain name for about £2. Hosting can be as cheap as £10 a year. Maybe even free if you look around.

To create the site itself, if you can do it in 30 days or less, get a trial version of Dreamweaver (invaluable program, but costs a fair wedge).

Alternatively, put the job out to tender, either somewhere like www.freelancers.net, or put the job on a University job board. Computing students will do work like this for a very reasonable rate.

Not a fan of dreamweaver, doesn't offer me anything useful.

If you want something like it for free you can try Amaya:

I just use a text editor at the minute, but think that would just give you a headache! Wink

I would have thought Dreamweaver & Photoshop are main tools needed for a learner trying to build a website,Using a text editor like Bongo is for proper web designers.
There are loads of free templates and stuff you can mess around with to get going, oneandone is a good place to start off buying a domain and getting some webspace.

Amaya is a WYSIWYG tool like Dreamweaver, but it's free.

The Gimp is a free image editor.

You'd be better off paying someone to make it than buying Dreamweaver and photoshop!

Really?

I've tended to find it quicker to set up the structure in Dreamweaver and then clean up the code rather than do it all from scratch (although I might just be particularly slow at coding).

What is particularly better about Amaya then?

Most of us (Leeds Uni web team) use Dreamweaver for the fluffy pages that we have templates for. Sadly we don't have a CMS so its the fastest thing for me to use to produce bog standard pages.

Like others have said Dreamweaver is excellent at creating a little project, keeping things organized and uploading your site to your host all under one roof. If you are a coder who does not want the flashy stuff on top then avoid.

CMS are easy to use and most hosting packages will come with some option or other with them.  Even if it doesn't you can download some for free and upload them to the site (e107, joomla etc)

It depends on what you want your website to do though.

I don't use Amaya, but I'd say the better bit is that it's completely free... always an advantage if you're just dabbling, no need to worry about trial expiring etc.

At the minute I'm using EditPlus, but that's purely out of habit, used it to code java, c++ and now any web stuff. It's fast to load, does syntax highlighting and has some handy find/replace and formatting tools.

Load time is pretty important, as I've usually done the job in EditPlus before I've even managed to open Dreamweaver - copy, paste, mark up, done.

I've been meaning to evaluate some others to see if they're better, but would need to dedicate some time - namely Aptana Studio and Quanta+ (would need linux for that, which isn't too big a deal), and a few others I've forgotten about
