I was with BT Broadband for about 4 years (early adopter me!), and every so often your home pod (the part of the network you connect to would go tits up badly), their website does tell you what pods are playing up. It's just a matter of waiting it out with them

Ironsides having probs as well. Very strange. He was chip leader at the time.
It's not strange that he's having connection problems just strange that he was chip leader

The situation for Broadband is a weird one in this country.
Basically at the moment BT own all the phone lines and exchanges. They are the ones that companies have to lease DSL lines from, and also have to liaise with in order to get customers connected to their particular DSL network.
Because BT have their own product, they can be rather "tardy" in dealing with customer orders, as it is in their own interest.
LLU (local loop unbundling) will be coming into force quite soon - this will mean that companies can buy and manage their own exchanges, so there will be less wait for BT to get their act in order - although there is a question as to how companies that have never had bricks and mortar things to manage will cope with this is open to discussion.
It's got to be a good thing though, to have to deal with a company as a competitor and a landlord must be a bit of a nightmare.
I deal with quite a few broadband issues as part of my job, and to get things moving in some cases has been a nightmare.
I'd suggest that if you are about to take on a Broadband connection, you see what their strategy is going to be regarding LLU and the size of their outfit. Contention is also an interesting concept that I would advise anyone to look at carefully as well. Contention is the number of people they allow to share your pipe - contention above 25 isn't going to be good.
I was with BT for ages (very early adopter - they used my house to demonstrate how to install the product!), and all was ok for a while, until they got busier, then it started to suffer.
I now share a 2meg connection over 2 pc's, and am pretty happy with it.
