Did anyone else see this on the BBC last night?  I knew that Pedigree dogs were inbred and because of this they had inherited genetic conditions - but I didn't know to what degree.

The creation of a 'standard' for breeds based on nothing but appearance, and because of this the dogs suffer is so abhorrent to me and the programme really made me angry at times.

If you missed it, you can see it here:

A favoured rant of mine (I've been on about it on Red's Diary thread a couple of times IIRC).

Unfortunately the show wasn't on in Scotland last night - I'll need to check when it's due to be broadcast.

Apparently the BBC is having doubts about whether to broadcast Crufts next year becasue of these concerns.

I'd love to see them refuse to though.

I found the Kennel Club 'experts' and the breed association chairs particularly distasteful in their responses and their attacks on the facts put forward by vets and scientists without actually putting forward their own studies or evidence.

Reminds me of other areas when people attempt to discredit scientific facts with ludicrous assertions based on very flimsy foundations.

Excellent news.  Let's hope none of the other channels broadcast it either.
