 I think that's why he's laughing, or it could be because Des asked him repeatedly if he was 'a pub player'.  They're just being silly.  Plus I think he also did that thing Americans usually do which is if you say you're from a place they assume you know everyone there.  Like if you say you come from London they ask if you know the Queen.    But with Devon instead of London.

And did they ask 'Do you know that lovely chap Jim-D'?  Smiley
