Can't really see it being good for reading on the beach, or in the bath....

I thought that's where it would be good. You could sit it in a holder when you're in the bath, and you just have to press the page button when you want to turn the page. Saves holding a book and then getting the pages wet when you need to turn to the next page.

Can it use any format of book, or do you have to get them through Sony?

This could be an issue I think. Waterstones advertise it, and say that from Sept 2008 (oh, that'd be now) that you can download 1,000s of books. Unless loads are available, then it's not going to be useful. I haven't looked into it too deeply, but I would hope that there's an open format that ebooks can be created onto - much in the same way as MP3s are a 'standard' music file. I guess that there are all sorts of music file formats - so unfortunately it might be the same with this. Don't really know. http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/navigate.do?pPageID=1576

Had a little look at the Sony site and they were selling books for $21 that Amazon were selling as an actual book for $23.50 - meaning the reader will pay for itself after a mere 120 books...

Amazon dot com have been selling them for a while now, they're DRM'd up obviously. Sounds a neat idea - you can get newspapers on there too which is nice, but I prefer to read things on paper rather than on screen.
