Renting a flat to 3 polish blokes and want to help set them up with internet access.

They've got wi-fi enabled lappies, so we're looking to get a wireless router with homephone kind of package deal.
They're happy with just the freeview on the telly, so we're not looking for SKY/Virgin media 3 in 1 packages. Just the internet + phone.

Problem is we don't want to go for a 12-month contract, as the tennants are only on a 5-month lease.
Can you get homephone and internet without a long term contract? Who's good to go with?

I'm guessing they won't give you the router for free. I might have to buy one. What's a good reliable router to buy (very small flat, range doesn't have to be massive) and where can I find it cheap?

Any help appreciated, cheers. Smiley

AOL look good because there's no contract and they give you a router.

I have issues with AOL being affiliated with the devil though. Sad  Anyone know of anything similar?

First line under the feature boxes.
"Order by 30/09/08. Subject to status and acceptance. Min. 18-month contract applies."

Yeah, that's a bit sucky.

They punt it as no contract for the free phonecall side of things and that's how they get away with it. Slyly mentioning that there's a flippin 18-mther on the broadband. So you can opt out at anytime from getting free weekend and evening calls. (which you can get with standard BT line rental, and opting out won't save you even 1p off your broadband bill.)

AOL=evil

Anyway, cheers for the linkage nd stuff.  thumbs up

what kind of telephone service you have has a bearing on the type of router you buy - if its a BT line (with BT or another provider) you will need a modem/router, if its a virgin/cable phone provider then its just a router you need.

funnily enough I have a few of both kinds at the moment Smiley

Netgear DG834 including free usb dongle - £40 (this is for BT)

Linksys Cable Router (quite a "rugged" product, can take some abuse) - £40

D-Link Wireless N-Draft (fastest possible at the moment) cable router - £65

if these are tempting to you then obviously let me know Smiley
