It's a wise move smithy. In a previous job, the company I worked for went through 'restructuring' (funny how companies never restructure upwards...). Everyone in company was evaluated and those deemed least valuable were made redundant. Few months later it happened again, same procedure as before. Somehow, I was still there, having been deemed critical to the company's future, or something. Anyway, one day the company went pop and we all lost our jobs, which meant no redundancy (and, indeed, lost wages). So you've done well to get out while the going is relatively good.

AS for your future employment, you haven't given us much to go on, other than 'I want to work in poker'. There are recruitment consultants who specialise in the gaming industry (in addition to Pentasia there's www.sportsrecruitment.co.uk ). Send them an email, or ring them up and explain your situation, experience and suchlike and they might have something. I got a job in the industry almost by accident, I applied for something in the betting game and the guy who looked at my CV saw the poker stuff I'd written down and happened to have a poker job come on his books that very morning.

This is all assuming you're not swayed by foxy_minx's suggestion of being in the same job as her...

In these circumstances you still retain redundancy entitlement and the DTI ultimately settle the claims of employees of the insolvent company.

Are you sure they went through a restructuring?? Something is amiss if they are making the least valuable members of staff redundant. Usually, the most valuable people are given decent sized payoffs to retire/reasonable redunancy offers and the least valuable are moved out of harms way usually in the form of a promotion to the board or senior management. Its the middle of the road people that get it in the neck with no pay out, no pension and no job.

I meant 'restructuring' in the loosest possible sense. They had to lose people and quickly. They were a young company with mainly young staff (most in their 20s/early 30s). Most people had only been at the company a few years (if that) and so the amount of redundancy they had to pay out would have been quite small.  I think the idea was to try and cut deadwood to leave themselves with their best people and the best chance of turning things round. I think this is a better idea than that of another company that went through the same thing at roughly the same time. They just decided to make redundant the people with the biggest salaries to save money. However, this coincided with their most experienced and best people, so they were shooting themselves in the foot somewhat.

One clown I worked with got made redundant a couple of months before the company went insolvant. However, in order to smooth his application for housing benefit (whereby they check to see how much money you've got in the bank) he held off paying in his redundancy cheque >:? Result - one worthless bit of paper...

I did manage to get some money off the DTI, but that was only because I'd been at the company over two years - many other people hadn't and got close to nothing.

Anyway, here, after today's football 'advice', is what Smithy's 'possible future career list' looks like:

Smithy and Snoopy - got to admire your guts for kicking in the job to play poker and finding a poker related job.  Good luck to you both.

On a side note.....this whole "restructuring" bit is very close to home.  I'm an accountant that specialises in insolvency and restructuring!!! Thought I would drop that in early doors in case it ever crops up in the future, and remember someone has to do it!!!!!
