There are a couple here that look similar too. If that photo says "Esher" on it, it's more likely to be British than American, I suspect.

Agree with it being British rather than American. With the Pith helmet and the fact they are non spoke wheels (possible dusty location), considered India and found this.......about 4 mins in though it is hardtop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9_h6IXeUZ0&feature=relatedGeo

the DVLA would give you the history of the plate for a small fee
plate looks to be VP966. When registered, who to, when car tyaken off road etc etc
alternatively ask MPOWER to find out, car dealers can access the database

Could be, headlights in original are lower though ... also rear viewing panel looks oval in the original ... maybe a different model to the pic above, but looks promising.
