i need to lay some new flooring in my kitchen, nothing fancy. So, is it just a matter of getting a roll of lino, some adhesive and a stanley knife and off I go or is there anything else I need to think about?

or am i better off going with self-adhesive floor tiles? I've got to replace it because the old tiles that are there are coming up at the edges and chipping away, but looks like they've been laid onto vinyl rather than straight on to the flooring - presumably if I pull the lot up that should be ok?

he will be paying, but I want it done sooner rather than later so would rather just get it done myself and dock the next rent payment off out to get some tiles - wish me luck!

Just make sure when you've taken all the material back to bare floor that it is all swept clean before laying, and if its a pourous concrete floor its a good idea to apply a coat of diluted PVA and then lay whilst its still damp
EDIT: Just read your talking of self adhesive tiles not quarry tiles

Claire,
If you are stripping back to the floor, make sure the surface is clean and even. This may be the reason the previous person laid vinyl before laying the tiles.
I done mine last year and when stripped back to floor, there were some uneven parts to the surface. I got round this by laying a thin 2-3 mm layer of plywood on floor and then applying tiles to that. Done the job quite nicely.

lol they're only vinyl tiles - don't think they've got asbestos in! Anyway, it's turned out to be a pretty painless task - took up the old tiles and lino and there was already plywood laid underneath - half the kitchen done now
