To cut a long story short at some time after 2am last night/this morning somebody threw something at my car and it has cracked my windscreen on the drivers side. Massive crack and will need replacing. We had some mates over and they were just on their way home and saw it happen (my car was parked accross the road from my house about 2 doors down). One mate went to check the car was ok and it looked fine. We didn't cause any agro as the house the lads who did it ran into is a house of girls (we think students) and 10 lads filled with beer from watching the Froch fight confronting 3 lads who had had one too many snake bites didn't sound like the recipe for a healthy debate. At that time i couldn't be bothered to waste my energy over it and thought i'd pop round this week and say i saw it happen, it's not gonna fly, we've all got cars on the road i'm sure you wouldn't be happy if it had happened to one of yours. Today with frost off the windscreen melted i've found the crack and just want general ideas of what i should do. I don't expect to get any money out of it no matter what i do. I think i'm favouring the option of reporting it to the police and leaving it at that. Minimum effort and nothing will come of it but thats what i expected so...house gets warned and i have to make little effort. Another option i've condsidered is going round explaing to the girls i saw it happen, windscreen needs replacing, if the lad that did it wants to sort it and pay for the new windscreen thats sound and i wouldn't get the police involved and that'd be the end of the matter and if he didn't then i'd be forced to get the police involved. More effort but more chance of getting some money??
Whats the best thing to do?

Well played to you for doing nothing at the time, no way I'd have let it go (unless so pissed I could barely see).
What Pokerfan says seems the least hassle option, I'd maybe still have a word with the girls just to let it be known you know what happened.

Go round the girls house ... tell em what happened and blackmail them into giving you sexual favours in return for your silence.

LOL +1 I think you should go round and tell the girls exactly what you just said on here, about them being drunk and not wanting to cause fuss at the time when it would have done no good. Tell them you don't want to get the police and their landlord involved but will do if they don't get the boy to stump up the money within a week. Add £50 to what it costs you at the mechanics for your inconvenience!

Wrong. You will have to pay your excess to get it replaced. I fitted windscreens for 15 years, and came across this situation many times. It might be worth knocking on the door and saying you saw what happened, and ask them to pay the excess or you will go to the police. If you're fully comp the excess will be around the £50/£75 mark.If you're only 3rd party it could be expensive depending on what car it is. Oh yeah,do me a favour and don't use Autoglass.

This seems like a good plan.
