Career Change...

Looking for abit of advice I guess, I have worked for a Bank for around 6 years and am in a comfortable job earning an ok wage (£23k + bonus), I am completing some more financial exams to further my 'career'.  The problem I face is I pretty much hate my job, 30% of my time is spent with customers selling (the only bit I enjoy) the rest is split between giving staff stick to generate me leads and paperwork.  At times my job is barable but I feel that I'm working towards a promotion that is more of the same which is obviously a bad idea as I already dislike my job.

I have never considered leaving in the past because I dont really have a clue what I'd like to do for a job, and if I did leave I would need to earn at least the same as what I get at the moment.  I have a degree in business management not that this makes a huge difference but I've seen a possible job at a supermarket as a department manager which I think I could get, I'm unsure if this is a great move but as its the new year I am considering my options as I dont think I can face another year in my current job.  I spoke to a friend who works in a similar position and he seems to enjoy his work, not sure if its a case of the grass always being greener etc. 

All I know is a change is required!  Just not sure what to do!

TY boldie, I have worked for the bank so long I feel kinda trapped.  I might have a serious look at other jobs not just the one my mate told me about in the pub!

We've all been there mate...the problem with not looking for something else is that you become used to being in a shitty job/job you hate..and before you know it you're wasting away years there.

 I presume your current job is basically a 9 to 5 Mon to Fri type job.
 You have to think whether you would be prepared to work shifts/and weekends ...in another profession.(ie  in a supermarket)

I  used to do shifts/weekends for quite a few years....and found it fine when young free and single......but  Mon to Fri/ 9 to 5 now suits my lifestyle!

I work in a Supermarket and it is not a great job.  To be honest, managers in supermarkets are glorified shelf stacker's. They do everything the minions do, only they have slightly more authority.  As Ripple points out, back shifts are horrible when you are used to finishing at 5pm.

  There are a few managers where I work who have degrees and have used this to get fast track promotion, however they still have to unload boxes and stand out in the rain loading up a compactor with leftover rotting produce, etc. One manager I work with has a physics degree and when I see him stacking fruit, I think to myself  "WTF are you doing here?"

I know what your saying but stacking fruit would be a whole world better than the stress I get in my current role.

Usually, you have two choices.

1: Do something you like and make money a secondairy consideration.

2: Do something you don't like and make money a primairy consideration.

If you have a third choice, you are extremely lucky.

Its really difficult because the guy I spoke to is a department manager, he says the hours are bad but the jobs pretty easy, however he is quite a positive guy and would enjoy any job he has.  I'm just not sure what to do, I guess I need a change most of all and a supermarket job seemed to be ideal as the money is ok and I guess I didnt really think that there would be too much stress!

Have you considered something different within your current company?

For example, I work at Scottish Widows which is now part of the Lloyds TSB group and all Lloyds vacancies are available to me. I work on pensions, however, say I wanted to go to the bank side, there is a chance I can find something keeping my same level of salary and just as important, all my additional benefits going.

Have you considered maybe going the other way Bank to Insurance or Pensions. Have you enquired through your companies graduate management scheme for example? Most of these have a 2 year period where you do 4 different job types for a six month spell, I reckon this would be quite interesting.

Or do you just merely want to move away from finance altogether?

Loads of jobs at Uni doing a cross section of things for 20-30k without any stress involved. Lots of holidays+chilled environment, look at their websites for job lists.
